A Snippet & Ink Christmas, #11
Possibly even more so than with movies, Christmas stories make me feel a certain nostalgia. Here are some of my favorite readings from the season, in no particular order.
1. The Night Before Christmas When we were little, this was the tradition: We would get home from my Aunt Dawnie's house late on Christmas Eve, and all sit with my father on the couch to read a really old, practically falling apart version of The Night Before Christmas.
2. The Gift of the Magi To me, more than any other Christmas story, this one captures the true holiday spirit. I love it year-round, and I think it's one that can be appreciated by everyone.
3. Luke 2:1-20 At some point between the time she arrived at our house and Christmas morning, my Grandma Chris would have me sit with her and read this passage.
4. Take Joy! This is the quintessential Christmas book. It has all the stories, poems, illustrations, and songs. Ours had long since lost it's cover, and lived in our piano bench for most of the year. I played a few Christmas songs out of it in the days when I knew how to play piano. It is out of print, but you should be able to find used ones for sale on Amazon or ebay. It is definitely worth searching for.

5. A Christmas Carol It's a classic not to be missed. We had a version with the strangest illustrations - I think the characters were all kinds of animals, and Ebenezer Scrooge was a mouse.

6. The Polar Express This was one of my kindergartners' favorites, and anything with Chris Van Allsburg's illustrations will top my list, too. I'm trying to convince my sisters that this should be our new Christmas Eve story that we read to my nephews.

What are your favorite holiday readings, Christmas or otherwise?
On Wednesday we'll finish up with 12 Days of Christmas posts, with Twelve Drummers Drumming and a host of delicious holiday goodies.

Truman Capote's "A Christmas Story"! I love it, and actually quoted it a few years back for my own Christmas cards.
I love all of these stories, perfect to read on the night before Christmas.
Wow, love all of these. Take Joy was our family favorite..anything Tasha Tudor! I also love Karin's Christmas Walk and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
Kathryn,
1. Thanks for visiting my blog. I was like, "Wow, Ms. Snippet & Ink visited one of my blogs!" I predict your blog will one day be world-famous, like The Sartorialist or Design Sponge.
2. I just spied your profile. You are gorgeous. If you weren't so talented at putting together these inspiration boards (which I've been reading since #1), I'd tell you to quit wasting your beauty in front of a computer. LOL.
3. My fave Christmas reads are Matthew-chapter 2, The Polar Express, and Dr. Seuss' original "Grinch".
Tamara you are too sweet! And how did I forget "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"?
