Real Wedding Saturday: JoEllen & Rob
Oh how I love a rustic wedding! And this one is full of playful, do-it-yourself details, captured beautifully by Stephany at EyeSpy Photography.

The September wedding took place at the Round Barn Farm in Red Wing, Minnesota. JoEllen and Rob both stayed at the bed and breakfast with their families for the whole wedding weekend.

The bride and groom both have backgrounds in design, so it was logical that they would design their own invitations - and print them, too! They were inspired by the weathervane on the top of the Round Barn, and it appeared as a motif on the stationery.

JoEllen wore darling red shoes by Stuart Weitzman.

Rob's suit, custom shirt, red-striped socks, and tie all came from Heimie's Haberdashery in St. Paul, Minnesota.

All of the flowers at the wedding were arranged by the couple's friend, Janet Chambers. The flowers were purchased in bulk from 2G Roses and Farms To Go, and some extras came from Appleblossom Flowers.

Rob spent the summer before the wedding working on his 1952 Chevy pickup truck. He and JoEllen and custom door decals made with the graphic they designed for their invitations. They drove the truck to the wedding venue, and to make their getaway on Sunday morning.

Little bells were placed at each seat for the ceremony for guests to ring as the couple made their way back down the aisle. The bells were embellished with tags that the couple Goccoed to read "Ring bells for first kisses and the newest Mr. & Mrs."

The ceremony was full of personal details. The Urthema String Quartet played a selection of the couple's favorite music, including the theme from The Life Aquatic, one of their favorite movies. JoEllen and Rob's fathers each did a reading, including a piece of scripture and a selection from The Little Prince.

Hay bales covered with vintage wool blankets made for rustic seats during the cocktail hour. The venue was hung with bunting flags that JoEllen made from 1950s tablecloths and other fun fabrics.

During the cocktail hour, guests played Kubb, a Viking lawn game which is sort of a combination of horseshoes and bowling. Croquet and Hatchet Toss were also set up for guests to play.

Seating cards, backed with red polka dot paper and tied with baker's twine, were clipped to a garden trellis with miniature clothespins. Guests ended up using them as nametags!

An antique wooden buggy held gifts from guests, and an old picnic basket held cards.

The reception was catered by Lunds and Byerly's.

Several types of cupcakes were baked by Lindquist Cake Shop, including chocolate and vanilla with various fillings (strawberry, fudge, Bavarian cream), and red velvet. JoEllen and Rob made the little cupcake flags, the cupcake stand was made by JoEllen's father, and JoEllen made the caketopper from vintage millinery supplies.

The couple danced to "Wastin' Time" by Ron Sexsmith for their first dance. In addition to dancing, there was a photobooth, games, and a bonfire for making s'mores.

The couple stole a kiss in the old truck at the end of the night.
Congratulations JoEllen and Rob! And thank you to Stephany of EyeSpy Photography for sharing these fabulous photos with us!

What a cute wedding! I love the wildflowers in mason jars, but they look so precarious hanging from the chairs! I wonder if there were any spills?
HOLY CRAP, this is my dream wedding!!! Everything from the cupcakes to Kubb, which is my fiancee's and my FAVORITE game. And I love the red. And can I hire this couple to do our invitations? They are perfect.

So beautiful and fun! I love the red!!

I usually hate anything deemed "rustic" and red is my least favorite color but wow do I love this wedding! I love everything about it. It's got me rethinking my distaste for rustic and red.
I love the invite packages. The ring bells add a sweet and fun touch. They did an amazing job at freshen up classic country elements.
I love it!

@ Whitney Erin - I got the polak dot paper from Paper Source, check out their site, they should have more. Also they have thank you notes and other goodies with the same/similar pattern.
Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. It was so much fun for us to plan and seeing it through fresh eyes makes it all the better!
Good luck on all your planning!

I love this wedding so much!!!
I'm organising a garden party soon and I'm definately stealing the idea of the Hay Bales with a lovely rug on top for seating. So great and useful for the garden afterwards. Thank you...
Hi JoEllen,
What a beautiful wedding - and it looks like it was so fun!! I am from Minnesota but we are getting married in California. We are trying to import some good ol' midwestern fun into our wedding and I was wondering where you got your Kubb game and if you made the darling instructions for it. I have looked around some online and not seen anything like it! Any tips you have would be welcome!! Thank you :)

We got our Kubb game from the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis (on Park) several years ago. It is a great set. We have also seen them online but never in the nice wood basket/crate that this set came in. Good luck with all your planning. If you want Kubb directions, I can send you a pdf. Contact Snippet and Ink for my personal email and I'll pass it on to you.
This Wedding is Absolutely beautiful and has inspired me in so many ways! My fiance and I are are getting married at the Round Barn Farm in Red Wing in 2010 and we are so excited, especially after seeing these pictures! If you have any suggestions about caterers or certain places to go for vendors, or ways to decorate it would greatly appreciated! Love all the things you do with the weddings and congratulations!
This stationery is beautiful! Does anyone know what kind of printer they used?
I'm in the market for a new printer and was curious if I should splurge for a laser printer or if an inkjet would suffice for our upcoming wedding! Thanks :)
Elizabeth - I used a Gocco for the silver of the invites and then (since I'm a graphic designer) I used our big professional printer that we've got at work. Depending on your design and the paper stock you choose, your home printer might work wonderfully. Or you could take it to a printer, like a Kinkos etc... and see what kind of results you get there.

Caligirl -
If you contact Snippet and Ink, you can email me and I'd be glad to share some of my experiences with you over email! Glad you like the pictures. It was a wonderful day.

I love this wedding and the gorgeous photos. I'm trying to do a bright red color scheme too and I'm struggling so much with what color my one bridesmaid should wear. I can't tell from these pics - what color did the bridemaids wear? I keep going round in circles - I want something that melds well with the bright red but doesn't fundamentally change the color scheme. Would love to know what was used here!
