Board #435: Autumn Yellow

Okay, before moving on to the inspiration board, I have to remind everyone that you have until midnight on Friday to enter the NYC engagement shoot giveaway! Don't miss out!

My goal with today's inspiration board was to demonstrate how yellow can be used in an autumn wedding, though I think this would work equally well for a late summer event. Slightly golden yellow, the brown of that warm, worn wood that you find on gorgeous old farm tables, and warm cream... perfectly cheery for a sunny autumn day.

Real Wedding: Shira & Geoff

Robert Sukrachand is one of those photographers whose work made me do a little dance when I first came across it - there is something simultaneously classic and fresh about his style, and I love the way he captures those little details. Pair his talent with a stylish bride and groom and an incredible New York City venue - what more could you ask for in the way of inspiration!? Thank you so much to Shira and Geoff who were kind enough to share their beautiful day with us...


For their save-the-dates, Shira purchased vintage New York City postcards on eBay and stamped the backs with a custom stamp set and red ink.


Working with Peter Kruty Editions, Shira and Geoff created an invitation suite that incorporated whimsical fonts, Victorian flourishes, and vintage images. The background pattern on the invites came from an old French postcard that Shira had kept on her bulletin board, the envelopes were lined with soft gray paper, and everything was tied together with bakers twine.


Shira wore a vintage-inspired dress by Vera Wang that she purchased at the Saks Fifth Avenue sample sale. Because she knew she would be dancing and moving around, Shira wanted to make sure she was comfortable - the chantilly lace dress with "wispy cap sleeves and a spray of sequins along the bodice that reminded [the bride] of fireflies" was perfect. After much difficulty finding the right pair of shoes, Shira ultimately settled on a pair of satin peep toes from Nine West. Shira shares a tip: After work I would slip into them and walk around my apartment until they were fairly broken in. They were super comfortable on my wedding day - no blisters!


The June wedding took place at the utterly unique 632 on Hudson. Says Shira: We wanted our celebration to feel homespun. I loved the idea of receptions from the 1920's and 30's that took place in the bride's home. My real childhood home in Oklahoma would have been a hike for our mostly NYC and French guests, so when we discovered 632 Hudson, we found our imaginary, long-lost eccentric relative's home in the West Village.


Yellow is Shira's favorite color, so it played a starring role in her bouquet of peonies, garden roses, chamomile, fresh herbs, and feathers. All of the flowers were done by Naomi DeMañana, floral designer for Martha Stewart Weddings. The rest of the wedding day color scheme drew its inspiration from the St. Germain packaging: dusty navy blue, jadeite, rose gold, with hints of 1940s red. Appropriately, the couple's signature cocktail included this elderflower liqueur.




Though the rainy June day moved the ceremony indoors, it also allowed for some darling photos under a cheery yellow umbrella which reads, appropriately, Merde Il Pleut.








Though Shira originally planned to make black-and-white cookies (a New York favorite), she just didn't have enough time. In a pinch, she ended up buying her favorite chocolate chip cookies by Tate's Bake Shop, and packaging them in cello bags tied with bakers twine.






The event was catered by Marcey Brownstein.


Says Shira: Our inspiration for the wedding was based largely on our love of movies. At the time of our engagement, Geoff and I were in a deep Fellini phase. We wanted our celebration to have the intensity and joy and fanfare of his films. Our DJ played lively Nino Rota scores during the cocktail hour!




The unique venue is a townhouse with three levels, without one space large enough to seat everyone together. Instead, tables were placed all around, and guests moved around and mingled, hitting up the buffet in the kitchen, lounging, dancing, or checking out the roof. The bride describes it as "like a house party."




Ostrich feathers were scattered on the dance floor for a whimsically dramatic effect. Oh, and some wonderful advice from the bride: Especially for people getting married in their home city - book a great hotel room for the night before and the night of the wedding. I stayed in the room by myself the night before, and it was really calming - beautiful bathtub, comfy robe, huge bed, loads of space (and no cat hair!) And then the morning after the wedding, Geoff went out and grabbed us two lattes and a croissant to enjoy before we headed over to our post-wedding brunch with family. We had such a fun time that morning talking about the wedding and the party and everything. It was great to have that intimate, private break from all of the family and cameras.

Real Wedding: Adrienne & Jake

Get ready - this wedding is full of so many wonderful details, and I had the hardest time narrowing down which images to post, so I just made it a big post with lots of gorgeous photos. By the talented Joel Flory, of course! And it's in one of the most incredibly beautiful places, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. But I don't need to tell you about it - see for yourself!


The bride wore a strapless dress by San Francisco-based designer, Amy Kuschel, and accessorized with comfortable white flip-flops from Tracey Asai Designs. Chestnut & Vine did all of the gorgeous flowers.




Adrienne and Jake had their first look at the gorgeous Cavallo Point in Sausalito.


In true San Francisco style, fog rolled in from the bay, making for some beautiful photos.




The wedding took place at the Marin Headlands Center for the Arts. The bride's mother spent tons of time making flowers from a variety of patterned papers which decorate the benches at the ceremony.


Guests found envelopes of vintage handkerchiefs waiting for them at the ceremony - Adrienne lined the envelopes with images from vintage wedding greeting cards. The programs were embellished with buttons from her mother's collection.


As Adrienne and her dad were about to walk down the aisle, there was a long pause in the music. The bride says, "I couldn't deal with everyone staring it me, so I said Hi everyone! and everyone laughed."


Multi-colored tissue paper pom-poms decorated the altar space.




Carrying the fonts and flower motif over from their invitations, Adrienne and Jake made the programs, menus, and escort cards. Adrienne found an old set of cabinet doors, mounted them with fabric and ribbon, and clothespinned the escort cards to the ribbon - what a clever display!


Instead of a traditional guest book, the couple had a "Filofax" - guests were asked to write notes on cards made from a variety of colorful paper, and then to file them alphabetically.




The family-style meal was catered by Katie Powers. Everything was organic and local, from the heirloom tomato and summer melon salad to the penne with corn and caramelized red onions.




An entire table was devoted to a cupcake buffet, all thoughtfully presented on vintage cake stands that Adrienne collected on eBay. The cupcakes were from the couple's favorite bakery, La Farine.




The guests could take home little kraft paper bags of the couple's favorite candies, customized with a rubber stamp from Berkeley Stamp & Engraving and an orange tag, and arranged in a vintage 7up crate.


Another favor that Adrienne and Jake had for their guests were CDs of some of their favorite songs. The kraft paper covers were decorated with vintage food labels the bride found on eBay.


Outside the venue, a bench was made more welcoming with family quilts and plants potted in galvanized buckets - guests were encouraged to sit, relax, and take in the view. I think this photo is probably a good example of some advice that Adrienne has for other brides: "Try to savor the moments and be in the moment as much as you can. It goes by so fast!"

Congratulations Adrienne and Jake! Your wedding was full of so many thoughtful details, and I'm not sure you could have picked a better venue.
