Board #19: Mariam's San Francisco Event

This board is especially for my best friend, Mariam! She asked how I would imagine a classic San Francisco wedding, at the Legion of Honor for example, so I thought I'd create a board with her in mind. Since it's autumn, and since Mariam loves chocolate at least as much as I do, I chose a warm chocolate and cream palette to convey Mariam's classic style. I hope you like it Mah!

Mood: classic, warm
Palette: chocolate, cream

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: J. Crew Camilla dress, hydrangea arrangement from MS, truffles from XOX, calligraphy favor box and keepsake boutonniere both from MS
Row 2: monogram from Ceci NY, individual cheesecakes, cable car, peony bouquet via The Preppy Wedding, grosgrain ribbon from Ribbons Galore
Row 3: chocolate crepe cake from MS, Sarah Arnett gown from Brides UK, photo from Anna Kuperberg, Legion of Honor photo from Loop Flowers
Row 4: Golden Gate Bridge, calligraphy by Laura Hooper, cheeses, pearl necklace

Remember, here are all five boards for this week (I'm forcing myself to stay away from the computer so I can study more efficiently for my upcoming GRE Literature Subject Test). You can either scroll through all of them right now, like me with a box of See's Candy, or you can come back every day to see the next one. I'll be back next week with more.

Board #18: Sweet Southern Comfort

The Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island is quite possibly the most romantic place I can imagine. It is the central inspiring element for this board, along with other very Southern details like mint juleps, a red velvet cake adorned with sugar magnolia blossoms, and pecan pies.

Mood: traditional Southern charm
Palette: green, white

{click to enlarge image}

Top row from left: mint juleps, miniature pecan pies, and peony bouquet all from MS; photo from The Knot

Board #16: Colonial Caribbean Style

There is something I love about the refined stuffiness of European style being unraveled by the heat and color of the tropics. Tropical fruits, rich wood, huge banana leaves, and delicate white fabrics. What a lovely and dynamic combination.

Mood: lush, vibrant
Palette: jungle green, mahogany, papaya

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: Schumacher dress from Brides UK, sunscreen and tropical cake from MS, wooden clutch via All the Best
Row 2: bouquet from MS, banana tree and house, centerpiece from Ariella Chezar

Board #15: Pumpkins and Wheat

Okay folks! You're going to get all five of this week's posts today, because I'm imposing an internet ban on myself for the week (or two?) so that I can get some serious studying done. If you're like me, you might have to scroll through them all at once. If you have personal discipline, you can come back and see a new one every day.

Now that it is officially fall, I thought I'd start this week with an all-out fall fest. The beginning of every season inspires me to say it's my favorite, but you can't deny the richness of autumn: its colors, foods, and oh the sweaters!

Mood: mellow fruitfulness
Palette: pumpkin, wheat, cream

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: photo, soup, and flower girls all from Brides; goody bag from MS
Row 2: pumpkin cooler from MS, wheat bunch and barn from Brides, calligraphy from Laura Hooper

Row 4: stationery from MS, photo via Style Me Pretty, bridesmaid dresses and candies from The Knot

Update! If you want more pumpkin love, then check out these two posts, here and here, over at Toast and Tables - gorgeous!

Board #14: The Little Prince

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is one of those children's books that can be enjoyed by adults at least as much as by kids. If you haven't read it, it's wonderful.

There are so many whimsical elements to this story. The things that stand out to me as points of inspiration are the red rose, the stars, and France itself. I also included the bird topper as an ode to the flock of birds that takes the Little Prince on his journey, the lanterns are for Lamplighter, and the map is for the Geographer.

Mood: simple and sweet
Palette: red, white, pale pink and blue

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: bird cake topper by Ann Wood, French wedding photo via {frolic}, pink and poppy cake from MS, La Duree macarons via Domino Daily Dose
Row 2: stationery from Bluebird Studios, constellation seating cards from MS, Derek Lam dress, Linzer tart from MS
Row 3: photo from Brides, lanterns by Pottery Barn Kids via Faye and Greer, map by Maybelle, German glass glitter stars at Vintageweave
Row 4: bouquet and votives from The Knot, pocket telescope from Antique Scrimshaw

Board #13: Curious George

When I taught kindergarten, I read Curious George all the time, and now it's one of my nephew's absolute favorites.

It also makes for fun inspiration! It would have to be a zoo wedding, with red balloons and yellow details, a short dress and wild animal elements.

Mood: playful, bright
Palette: yellow, red

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: Jack Johnson CD, alligator stationery from Linda & Harriett, Oscar de la Renta dress from Brides UK, chocolate-covered bananas from MS
Row 2: elephant hedges from Topiary Art and Designs, Barrel of Monkeys, glass-roof tent, yellow dress via Whispering Pine
Row 3: invitations by Austin Press, calla lilies and cake both from The Knot
Row 4: photo from Junebug Weddings, San Francisco Zoo, chilled mango puree from The Knot, Lucite bracelets from Plastic Fantastic

Update! You can really up the level of sophistication on a wedding like this with inspiration like this from Toast and Tables.
Update! Perfect cake from the Cake Girls!

Board #12: From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

Sorry for the late post today! Now who didn't want to run away to live in the Met after they read this book by E.L. Konigsburg?

Okay, well I did. And what better inspiration for a wedding than a visit to one of the most incredible museums on the planet? For this board, I went with an elegant New York event, with mostly black and white elements, with some dabs of deep purple and grays.

Mood: elegant, tasteful
Palette: charcoal, white, aubergine

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: black pearls, cake from Beaux Gateaux, Alberta Ferretti aubergine coat, hairstyle from The Knot
Row 2: the Met, Pronovias gown from Brides UK, thistle boutonniere from The Knot
Row 3: dahlia bouquet from MS, Prestat chocolates, suit from Brides UK
Row 4: Maybelle calligraphy, match barrel from Wedding Things, tuxedo bouquet from MS

Now, as for actually getting married at the Met, check this video out...definitely in the spirit of Claudia and Jamie Kincaid hiding away in the museum.

Board #11: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

If you could convince your honey to go with a tea party wedding, then congratulations for you! I can't imagine that would fly in my life, so I went with a bridal shower inspiration board instead. You know, the sort of tea party Hunter S. Thompson might attend? This is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland after all.

Tarts, tea, hats, croquet and a dress by Betsey Johnson, because she'd be there, too. I couldn't find any examples, but I would also make sure everything edible/drinkable had a tag on it that said "Eat Me" or "Drink Me."

Mood: zany, colorful
Palette: indiscriminate

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: photo from Plum Party, white rabbit illustration, wedding hat, croquet set via Faye and Greer
Row 2: Betsey Johnson dress, Pink of Perfection linzer tarts, checkerboard floor from Brides, orchids from MS
Row 3: mismatched plates via Pretty Little Things, teapot from Alice's Tea Cup, card by Austin Press
Row 4: whimsical beach party, invitation by Bird and Banner, tea tin centerpieces from MS

If you like this, you should definitely have a look-see at this incredible birthday party photographed by Jessica Claire.

Update! Take a look at this gorgeous deck of cards by Green Chair Press. Possible invite or favor inspiration...

Board #10: The Secret Garden

Hi folks! I'm posting Monday's board a little early, because I have so much to do tomorrow... This week, all of my boards have been inspired by children's books, and today it's The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

I loved this book (and the movie) as a kid, and after reading it, I would walk around parks and past houses with high hedges and imagine that somewhere there was a secret garden. I thought a garden wedding inspired by it would be just lovely. Something beautifully overgrown and romantic, with pale greens and pastels.

Mood: magical, intimate
Palette: celery, lilac

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: centerpiece by Ariella Chezar, antique key, lavender seating cards from MS, photo from Rebecca Thuss
Row 2: cupcakes by Le Cupcake, photo from Brides, invitation by Bird and Banner, centerpiece by Ariella Chezar
Row 3: potted place card from MS, photo from Hume Seeds, Vera Wang dress via Brides, secret garden door
Row 4: photo from Ariella Chezar, ivy cascade from MS, rings by Hannah Clark, "crottin" cakes from MS

Board #9: Viva Las Vegas!

If you're going to get married in Vegas, you've got to have bold colors and a whole lot of sass. And what's sassier than turquoise and red together - so unexpected and vivid enough to stand up to the glitz and lights of Sin City. Some silver elements would probably work well here too, to reflect the cake topper. Maybe this purse from J. Crew?

Mood: bold and sassy
Palette: turquoise, red

{click to enlarge image}

Top row from left: photo from Brides, red dice, Vespa bride via Black Eiffel, giant map invitation by Omnivore via Brooklyn Bride
Row 2: Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, photo from Junebug Weddings, Jackpot cake by Lovin' Sullivan, turquoise shoes
Row 3: aquamarine ring from Gray's Antique Markets, flowers by Ariella Chezar, Blue Fin cocktail, Janey dress from J. Crew, photo booth save-the-date by Bird and Banner

If you like this color combination, you should also check out Martha's take on it here.

Update! For more game inspiration, take a look at this post over at Toast and Tables.

Board #8: Shipwrecked

There are so many ways to do a beach wedding, but I was totally inspired by Kylie Lambert's shipwreck photo. It adds a different element to the natural beauty of the beach and the ocean. So often it seems that beach weddings go the route of bright tropical colors, as a way of reflecting an exotic location. I decided to stick with an understated palette, to let the natural surroundings shine through.

Mood: breezy and barefoot
Palette: sand, shades of white, with touches of pastel

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: photo from Paul Johnson, hand-lettered menu from Crystal Kluge, J. Crew Celeste Ramie dress, shipwreck coin pendants, seashell seating cards from Rebecca Thuss
Row 2: pearl cake, sea urchin votives from Beach Dwelling, photo from The Knot, cowry shell brooch
Row 3: white bouquet, oysters, and coral centerpiece all from MS; hairstyle from The Knot, invitation from Bottle Me A Message
Row 4: bamboo poles and starfish decoration from The Knot, photo from Cig Harvey, photo from Kylie Lambert

Also check out this post from Faye and Greer featuring another fabulous "sunken ship" invitation.

Update! I found this gorgeous photo and thought it would have been a great addition to the shipwrecked storyboard. I wish I was there right now!

Board #7: Elizabeth's Quirky Event

This board is especially for my dear friend Elizabeth! She sent me a photo of the "Farewell Celebration" poster and the yellow J. Crew shoes as initial inspiration, and requested something "quirky" in neutral tones with pops of color. I know Elizabeth adores music (and musicians...), so I also added a musical element. I kept seeing things that I thought Elizabeth would like, so this turned out to be my biggest board yet - it may not even qualify as an inspiration board. More of an event outline! Either way, I hope you enjoy it! What do you think edubs? (Check out Elizabeth's blog, brown paper & grey linen.)

Mood: quirky vintage
Palette: beige, mustard, vermillion, with hints of kelly green

{click on image to enlarge}

Top row from left: suit from The Knot, bouquet from The Green Vase, cupcake from MS, picnic via {frolic}, Busy Beaver buttons via Brooklyn Bride, Leigh Miller photo via enjoy:{the blog}
Row 2: photo from Cig Harvey, letterpress card from typehigh, kissing tree, farewell poster, yellow cardigan photo via {frolic}, novelty favor via Oh Happy Day
Row 3: photo from Anna Kuperberg, shoes from J. Crew, photo from What Junebug Loves!, sweater vest photo via {frolic}, stitched invitation from Bird and Banner
Row 4: photo booth guest journal via martawrites, cake from Vanilla Bakeshop, harmonica, Yay flags via Wedding Bee, Jones Orange & Cream soda, canoes from Michelle Rago (photo by Dasha Wright)

While I didn't pull any images from it, I definitely had Lena Corwin's fabulous wedding in mind while putting this board together. If you haven't seen it already (it was featured in the Spring 2006 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings) you should definitely take a look.

Update! How perfect are these invitations via Brooklyn Bride? They really fit the look of the poster Elizabeth sent me originally.

Wow!

When I started this blog last week, I honestly thought it would exist in a sort of vacuum - with no audience or feedback. How wonderful that other people have found it and are enjoying it! Thank you for all of the positive reinforcement, and please keep coming back. Also, thank you to Oh Happy Blog for helping to credit Sillapere with the beautiful ribboned fence on Board #5 (if you haven't checked out either of these sites, you certainly should). As I said before - if you ever see something that I haven't marked, and you know where it came from, please do let me know so I can give the right person credit. Again - THANK YOU!

Board #6: Rock Star Nobility

There is something fun about combining stuffy blue blood and irreverent rock star for a wedding I could/would never have. But they're such gorgeously opulent elements...

Palette: hot pink, sapphire blue, ivory
Mood: lavish

{click to enlarge image}

Top row, from left: Dita von Teese from Vogue via Social Design, bouquet from MS, calligraphy from Laura Hooper
Row 2: Antoinette flatware from Gracious Style, Irish manor, Dutch still-life
Row 3: horse and carriage, Asscher cut engagement ring, pleated cake from Brides
Row 4: Le Bal Crillon, little attendants at Elizabeth Hurley's wedding, vintage Rolls Royce

Board #5: Autumn Air

Even though we're still really in between seasons, with the hottest days of summer hopefully behind us and the rich colors of fall still ahead, I thought I'd go ahead and get really excited for fall anyway. At least in terms of visual inspiration, it may be my favorite season.

Palette: gold, orange, brown
Mood: refined rustic

{click to enlarge photo}

Top from left: dahlia boutonniere from The Knot, rusty truck, recycled correspondence from Bari Zaki, Burberry scarf
Row 2: miniature candied apples from Rebecca Thuss, autumn vineyard via Here Comes the Guide, rustic table from Matthew Mead, ribboned fence from Sillapere
Row 3: pear favors and Vera Wang gown from MS, Old St. Hilary's church, Maybelle calligraphy and rusty key
Row 4: barn from Brides, double-sashed dress via flickr, croquembouche, fruit and flowers centerpiece from MS

Labels: , , , , ,

Board #4: Take the Train

The train kept me up last night and has been going by all day, so I thought I'd put together a somewhat art deco-y train-inspired collage, including (of course) a train whistle favor.

Palette: rich browns, cream, black
Mood: luxurious, adventurous

{click to enlarge photo}

Top from left: vintage suitcases, train whistle toy, all aboard, train tracks
Row 2: luggage tags from Brides, train tracks kiss from Next Exit, Art Deco cap-style veil, vintage train poster
Row 3: photo from Next Exit, Sass & Bide dress via Bag Trends, bouquet from Artfool, vintage train ticket from eBay
Row 4: Carolina Herrera dress via Brooklyn Bride, train dining car, April Reed cake, three-piece suit via The Sartorialist

I also found this great shot on Brides via Faye and Greer. What is so romantic about trains and railroad tracks...?

Labels: , , , ,

Board #3: Pretty in Pink

I would never say that pink is one of my favorite colors, and my instinct would be to avoid it, but it seems that for weddings, some amount of pink is almost inevitable. Besides, I think Isaac Mizrahi said that anyone who tells you he doesn't like pink is lying. So, with this collage I give over completely to pink, for the ultimate flirty, ruffly, girly pink wedding. I could also see this making a great shower theme.

Palette: peach, raspberry, cream
Mood: flirty and elegant

{click to enlarge photo}

Top from left: apricot place card and ribbon curtain both from MS, bouquet and tables both from Ariella Chezar
Row 2: Tara Jones calligraphy, J. Crew Camilla dress, photo from Jessica Claire, J. Crew Genevieve dress
Row 3: cheese place card from MS, cootie catcher via The Bride's Guide, Rolls Royce from Laura Novak, bouquet from MS
Row 4: cakes from MS, ice cream from The Knot, Sofia sparkling wine, Beltane Ranch via Here Comes the Guide

Labels: , , ,

Board #2: Summer Picnic

Summer is officially coming to an end, and I could think of no better way to bid it farewell than with a fabulously fun picnic. I wonder if a picnic reception is so much better in theory than in practice? Ants? Abundant flashing from sitting on the ground?

Palette: tangerine, yellow, lime green
Mood: playful

{click to enlarge photo}

Top from left: sour cherry pie from MS, pink wraps, MS almond honey favors, green pinwheels from Brides
Row 2: Boylan sodas, ruffly dress via Oh Happy, bouquet from Ariella Chezar, barefoot groom from Paul Johnson Photography
Row 3: poppies, picnic blankets via {frolic}, yellow invitation from Linda & Harriett
Row 4: butterfly lanterns from MS, cake from Lovin Sullivan, yellow bridesmaid skirts via {frolic}

Labels: , , , , , ,

Board #1: Spanish Style

The initial inspiration for this romantic collage was the Vosges Gaudi truffles, but it quickly turned into more than that, drawing from Sevilla's oranges and the Alhambra's intricate mosaics.

Palette: red, orange, gold

Mood: romantic old world

{click to enlarge photo}

Top from left: Toledo gold, photo from Jessica Claire, sangria pitcher
Row 2: Sevilla orange trees, MS citrus inspired wedding, mantilla veil from Anne Ruthman, Grand Marnier cake from The Knot
Row 3: Sevilla Feria poster, Cecile Cathedral dress from Ulla-Maija, the Alhambra in Grenada, Alhambra inspired tent from Raj Tents
Row 4: churros con chocolate, wax-sealed invitation, Gaudi saffron truffles from Vosges
Row 5: flowers from The Knot, orange blossoms, Betsy Dunlap calligraphy

Update! Check out this photo over at Brides. Perfect!

Introduction

Thank you to Abby Jean over at Style Me Pretty for the "Inspiration Board" idea. I will try to post one daily. Also, whenever possible I have included information and a link for each image, but some of them are photos I have had saved for awhile and for which don't have any information. If you see an unmarked photo, and you know where it came from, feel free to let me know so I can give the right person credit. I hope you enjoy these little inspired (mostly) wedding collages!

Submission Requirements FAQ

Please note that I am no longer accepting engagement shoot submissions.

I've had lots of emails with inquiries about my submission requirements, so if you'd like to submit a real wedding or editorial shoot for a Snippet & Ink feature, here's some info for you:

Q. What kinds of weddings do you feature on Snippet & Ink?
A. I try to feature a variety of weddings (backyard, destination, urban, rustic - I love them all!). I especially love to feature weddings that are unique/unusual, thoughtful, creative, with lots of great details, not overly extravagant or over-the-top (with a few exceptions), and if they were done on a budget, that's always a bonus.

Q. What kinds of editorial shoots do you feature on Snippet & Ink?
A. As with real weddings, I like to feature a variety of editorial shoots that showcase vendors' talents and styles, inspiring ideas, and DIY-projects are fun, too. Of course beautiful locations and creative details are always fun.

Q. Do you feature weddings that have already been published somewhere else?
A. Because so many Snippet & Ink readers also read other wedding blogs, I prefer to feature weddings and shoots that have not already been published elsewhere. If you are a photographer with a large blog following, and you think that someone might snag one of your features, please consider waiting to post on your own blog until the feature has a chance to go up on Snippet & Ink. If you are a bride or groom, please consider only submitting your wedding to one blog at a time.

Q. Do submissions have to come from the photographer?
A. No! Anyone - bride, groom, photographer, planner - can submit a wedding or engagement shoot.

Q. How should I submit a wedding or editorial shoot?
A. Please shoot me an email with the subject line "Submission: Wedding, Couple's first names" or "Submission: Editorial, brief description." Attach 15 small format images that help to convey the mood and details from the wedding or shoot. Please do not embed images in your email.

Q. What information do you need for a wedding feature?
A. It's important to me that Snippet & Ink readers really get a sense of the story that goes along with a wedding. The sooner I have all of the images and details, the sooner I can feature the wedding! If I accept a submission, I will ask for the following information from the couple:

- Why did you choose this for your wedding? What inspired you?
- Venue, date, number of guests.
- Dress designer, shoes, jewelry, groom's suit, bridesmaid dresses, etc.
- Stationer, floral designer, rentals, music, etc.
- Menu, drinks, dessert, cake flavor, caterer, baker.
- DIY elements.
- Budget tips.
- Favorite moment/s, surprises, traditions.
- Advice you'd give to other brides
- Anything else that helps tell the story of the day!

Q. What is your email address?
A. kathryn{at}snippetandink{dot}com

Q. When will you get back to me?
A. Unfortunately, I receive so many submissions every day that I am unable to respond personally to each one. If you have not heard back from me within 7 days, please go ahead and submit the wedding elsewhere.

And if you have any other questions, of course you can shoot me an email anytime. I look forward to seeing whatever you send over, and though I receive far too many submissions to feature all of them, it is always so much fun to learn about new photographers and vendors, and to see how creative Snippet & Ink readers are!
