Board #382: A Day at the Races

With the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, I thought it would be fun to pull together a race day inspired wedding board. Roses, mint juleps, ladies in hats and men in seersucker suits... Embellish bouquets with prize ribbons and use trophies or silver julep cups as vases for centerpieces. Decorate stationery and cakes with horseshoes, serve Derby pie, and hire a bluegrass band to serenade the cocktail hour. And if you hold your wedding on Kentucky Derby Saturday, be sure to provide your guests with cards so they can place their "bets" on the winning horse.

Mood: race day festivities
Palette: rose red, grass green

Board #381: Low Country Love

I suppose in some ways this wedding board is inspired by my road trips through South Carolina and Georgia - one of my absolute favorite things about driving through the South is the Spanish moss in the oak trees, and I wanted to create an inspiration board around that low-country look. Something simple and easy going. Nothing fussy or overwrought. A small town feel. Magnolias are an obvious floral choice, and peach jam and grits make for an appropriate regional favor. And I know it's rather trendy at this point, but I never get sick of sweet tea served in a mason jar.

Mood: low country rustic charm
Palette: Spanish moss, kraft paper, pale peach

Board #380: Pretty Pretty Picnic

So sorry for the late post today friends! Some inspiration boards are easier to finish than others, and for some reason I had the hardest time finding just the right images to pull this look together. I was going for a picnic wedding, but with a slightly different feel than some of the other picnic inspiration boards I've posted. This time, instead of a retro kitschy look, I wanted something that was a little bit bold and utterly feminine. Maybe with a bit of a woodsy feel to it? Anyway, I hope you enjoy and that it was worth the wait!

Mood: relaxed romance, flirty fun
Palette: oak leaf, raspberry, marigold

Board #379: Vintage Orange Grove

I was totally inspired by Stephanie Williams' recent vintage-style photo shoot, especially this shot of the couple in front of an orange tree, and thought it would make for a beautiful look for a wedding. This is another example of how a gorgeous venue requires very simple decor.

Real Wedding Saturday: Ingebeth & Matthew

There are so many things to love about Ingebeth and Matthew's lovely winter wedding. They chose a February date so that their American guests could experience something truly Norwegian - like a Norwegian winter! And almost every element, from the venue to the priest to the hairdresser, involved people the couple knew well. Even the photographer, Bryan Johnson from A Bryan Photo, had a personal connection as the brother of Ingebeth's brother-in-law - and he captured the day beautifully!

Ingebeth wore a dress by Marylise. Her earrings and bracelet were made by a woman that she met at the Christmas market in Oslo.

The church where the ceremony took place - Lisleherad Church - is next to a family farm where Ingebeth's ancestors go back to the 12th century.

Matthew wore a suit from J.Crew and a wool coat that belonged to Ingebeth's great-grandfather.

Though bridesmaids and groomsmen are not traditionally part of Norwegian weddings, Ingebeth and Matthew chose to include them. The bridesmaids wore traditional Norwegian dress. Though only a few of Matthew's family members were supposed to travel from the United States, his older brother surprised him by arriving at his apartment in Norway the day before the wedding.

The reception took place at Tuddal Høyfjellshotell, a hotel in the mountains with exactly the warm and intimate atmosphere - and great food - that Ingebeth and Matthew wanted to provide for their 55 guests.

All of the decor was done by Ingebeth and her friends, including a lovely ribbon monogram at the couple's table.

Congratulations Ingebeth and Matthew! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful wedding with us, and for sharing all of these sweet details. And thank you to A Bryan Photo for sharing these incredible photos - truly special moments.

Board #378: Gray and White

I absolutely fell in love with this gorgeous tent from the Arabian Tent Company (photo by Polly Alexandre), so I thought I'd build a wedding board around it. Clean white and soft gray - a sweet palette that would work for almost any season, and in a variety of venues.

Board #377: In the Garden

Maybe because it's spring, but I'm really leaning toward pastels and muted colors lately. Today's inspiration board imagines an overgrown garden, with a slightly wild, bohemian feel to it. Lots of flowers and vines, little votives hanging in trees, and hand-illustrated invitations create a sense of low-key elegance.

Board #376: French Flair

Another color palette that I've yet to tire of - I hope you still love it, too! Something about this inspiration board transports me to Paris... A mostly white and very pale gray background is accented with butter yellow and black. Stripes add a touch of whimsy: package favors in striped boxes, wrap your bouquet with a striped ribbon, decorate with classic striped hat boxes. Incorporate figs and blackberries into your floral elements for a touch of black that isn't overly sleek or stark.

Mood: whimsical French chic
Palette: butter yellow, black, pale gray, white

Real Wedding Saturday: Kristin & Dan

You know I can't resist a low-key, rustic wedding, and if you're anything like me, then you're going to love today's feature, shot by the talented Jen Fariello.

With a number of guests traveling from around the country and even other countries, Kristin and Dan wanted to create an easy going weekend for their guests. The Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing in Virginia was the perfect venue for their April wedding. Almost all of the guests stayed at the camp in rustic cabins, and some even camped out. Before the ceremony, about half of the guests did the zip line at the camp!

Kristin wore a dress by Augusta Jones.

Hedge Fine Blooms made the bouquets for Kristin and her sister.

Kristin and her friend, Dana, made all of the paper items themselves, mostly using a Gocco printer, and printed on paper from Paper Source. Dana designed the flower motif that was repeated on all of the various pieces.

Kristin's necklace, earrings and hair comb were all made by her friend Dana.

The afternoon ceremony was held in a field with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Kristin's three brothers wore kilts (as a nod to Dan's heritage) and walked her down the aisle. Kristin and Dan wrote their vows, and the ceremony included readings by two friends, as well as Tim O'Brien's "One Drop of Rain" sung by another friend.

A post-ceremony "cocktail hour" were held at the lodge, a five minute walk from the ceremony site, and the reception was held in a pavilion up the hill from the lodge.

The camp catered the entire weekend, from a Friday night barbecue to the wedding reception on Saturday to a Sunday southern brunch. Drinks were served in jam jars.

Kristin and her sister made all of the centerpieces themselves, filling clusters of vintage vases, tea cups or jam jars with white flowers or candles. Squares of Amy Butler "Dancing Mums" fabric added color to the tables.

An old-time bluegrass band, the JugBusters played two-stepping and flat-footing songs at the reception, as well as waltzes and called square dances. They got all of the guests dancing well into the evening!

Congratulations Kristin and Dan! Thank you for sharing your wedding with us! And thank you to Jen Fariello for sending over these great photos!
