Real Wedding Saturday: Catherine & Andrew

I couldn't resist sharing this beautiful lake wedding with you - it seemed so appropriate for the last unofficial weekend of summer. Jessica and Nate of Jessica Johnston Photography took these gorgeous photos of Catherine and Andrew's wedding and was kind enough to share them with us. The wedding took place at Catherine's parents' home, and was full of lake-front, summer-house charm and plenty of thoughtful details.

The invitations featured calligraphy and an illustration of her parents' home and sailboats by Pier Gustafson. They were printed by Aardvark Letterpress, and mailed out in envelopes addressed by Pier and stamped with three vintage LOVE stamps and one old 3-cent Michigan stamp.

Catherine grew up spending summers at this home on Torch Lake in Northern Michigan, which her parents now call their year-round home. It seemed like the perfect place to host 150 guests for a fun wedding weekend. Catherine and Andrew now live in Los Angeles, so for most of their guests, it was a destination wedding.

Local legend says that National Geographic once named Torch Lake the third most beautiful lake in the world. There are even license plates that declare this, but no one has ever been able to track down the original article, and National Geographic claims never to have printed it.

The barbecue rehearsal dinner took place at a friend's house down the lake. Along with ribs and chicken, they served beer from Short's Brewing Co., a local microbrewery.

The tables were scattered with old-fashioned candy, and decorated with birch vases from Small Stump filled with cedar branches and daisies from Catherine's mom's garden, as well as with Ball jars filled with sand and votive candles.

The night ended with a bonfire and s'mores.

Catherine splurged on Christian Louboutin wedges. Her dress, from J.Crew, was a last minute purchase (after the dress she was having custom-made turned out to be a disaster!).

Andrew wore a suit by Tom Ford, and a tie from Brooks Brothers inspired by one posted on Yellow Brick Blog.

The ring pillow, depicting the state of Michigan and four doves, was needlepointed by Catherine's mother, who gave it to her as a bridal shower gift.

Instead of a large bridal party, Andrew's only attendant was his sister, and Catherine's only attendants were her brother and sister.

Because the outdoor ceremony space was naturally so beautiful, not many decorations were needed. Catherine and Andrew wrote the ceremony themselves and were married by two friends. Despite choosing to have a secular ceremony, they were married under a chuppah (built by Catherine's dad and his friend out of birch logs they found in the woods) because its symbolism - representing the home the couple will build together, with four open sides to represent hospitality - meant so much to them.

Inspired by Erika of Thoughtful Day, Catherine changed into gold Dior sandals for the reception, which she has worn over and over again since the wedding.

Cocktail napkins were printed with the recurring sailboat illustration by Pier Gustafson.

For about a year before the wedding, Catherine began collecting milk glass vases off eBay for her centerpieces. She wanted the arrangements to look as though they had come straight from the garden. Luckily, her local Los Angeles florist - Gilly Flowers - happened to be Michigan the weekend of the wedding. So they hired him to choose flowers from the flower market in Detroit, and then a friend arranged them beautifully.

The "photobooth" set up by Jessica and Nate was not only fun for guests, but also made sure that Catherine and Andrew had plenty of great photos of everyone.

Congratulations to Catherine and Andrew, and thank you so much for taking the time to share all of the beautiful details of your day with us. And of course thank you to Jessica and Nate of Jessica Johnston Photography for all of your gorgeous photos, as usual - Catherine couldn't say enough good things about you!

Board #273: Garden of Black and White

Black and white probably isn't the most obvious palette for a garden wedding, but the gorgeous invitation by Ceci New York convinced me otherwise. A bouquet of sweet peas and privet berries, white roses on a wrought-iron fence, Wedgwood jasperware, black figs and cheese - each of these elements play up the combination of black and white in a way that is elegant and subtle, rather than stark and modern. I would pull black bentwood chairs up to tables covered in soft white linens, fill black vases with lush white ranunculus, and hire a silhouette artist to send guests home with unique, custom favors. Yes, I think black and white works well for a garden wedding.

Nie Nie Day

I want to take a moment to share something really amazing with all of you.

Fellow blogger, Stephanie Nielson of Nie Nie Dialogues, was in a private plane crash earlier this month. She and her husband, Christian, are both being treated for serious injuries and burns, and are in for months of expensive and painful recovery. The amazing part is this - the response of the blogging community. Gabrielle at Design Mom rallied over 200 bloggers to host silent auctions, the proceeds of which will all go directly to the Stephanie and Christian Paypal Fund to help them cover medical costs, the care for their four young children, and general household expenses as they recover.

I am absolutely blown away by both the heart and the motivation of the blogging community to pull together in a time of tragedy, and to act as such an strong and extended network of support. And you can be a part of it! If you are a blogger, consider making a Nie Nie Day post today to spread the word about the silent auction. If you are a reader, consider heading over to the silent auctions and breaking out your pocketbook for a good cause - you can see the list of items available HERE. Or, you can make a direct donation HERE. And thoughts and prayers are always free.

Board #271: Lemon-Lime

How cool do you have to be to wear a mini-dress on your wedding day? Pair it with a chic mini-coat and yellow heels, and you're all set. (Well, that and figure out where that amazing interior is and convince them to let you have your reception there.) The different elements in this wedding board - from the mix-tape invitation to the craspedia bouquet - are both modern and retro mod, and I think they fit together nicely. I included pops of both lemon yellow and lime green here, but you could easily go with one or the other.

Mood: playful, mod
Palette: lemon, lime, white, touches of gray

Real Wedding Saturday: Julia & Burke

I first saw the beautiful tomato basket centerpieces by Chelsea Fuss on her blog, {frolic}, and thought it would be so fun to see more from it! Julia and Burke were married last August at the Mazama Lodge in Government Camp, Oregon. They chose this venue because the lodge is owned by the organization that runs the climbing school where Julia and Burke first met.

Mazama Lodge is located on the southern slopes of beautiful Mt. Hood. The day was pretty cloudy and cold, typical of the Pacific Northwest!

Bunting flags hung from the lodge to the rustic ceremony structure.

Some of the 120 guests were seated, and others stood together on the front porch of the lodge.

Julia and Burke's climbing friends created a surprise tunnel of ice axes as the couple walked back down the aisle.

Julia's dress, by Siri in San Francisco, is actually a bridesmaid's dress that she ordered in cream. Her only attendant was her sister, Jennifer, who wore a dress by Lynn Lugo.

Centerpieces were baskets of gorgeous red and yellow in-season tomatoes.

Fuzzy throws were available for guests to keep warm.

Guests were invited to take home tomatoes when the left the wedding. On the sign was a perfect quote from a John Denver song:
Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What would life be without home grown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love and home grown tomatoes.

A variety of cakes by Portland's Finales Desserts were set up on unique wood stands.

Congratulations Julia and Burke - and happy anniversary! Thanks so much for sharing your wedding with us, and thank you to the talented Chelsea Fuss for her lovely decorations, and to Karl Maasdam for sharing these photos.
