Board #496: Secret Garden, Revisited

One of the very first inspiration boards I ever posted was inspired by The Secret Garden, and when I saw this post over on Dress Design Decor a couple of weeks ago, I immediately wanted to revisit the theme (and hopefully improve upon it). Faded blue, vintage keys, overgrown vines, and romantic stationery pull the look together, while a chandelier hung in a tree, a unique candelabra, and paisley printed linens add something unexpected.

Board #495: Champagne and Cake

The other day, I was revisiting one of my very favorite blogs, Faye & Greer. It was one of the first blogs I read, and it was one of the reasons I decided to start Snippet & Ink. Though it's been "out of service" for nearly three years, I still find ideas and inspiration there when I stop by and browse the archives. On this visit, I came across an inspiration board they made for a champagne and cake wedding, and I thought I'd expand on that look and idea for today's post.

Having a champagne and cake reception is such a sweet and sophisticated way of saving money on your wedding. Though I imagined a venue with a rustic feel to it, this type of wedding could easily translate to a garden setting, church hall, or historic building. Splurge on two or several gorgeous (and delicious) cakes, and buy champagne in bulk (some places will even let you return unopened bottles). Fabric rosettes appear on the bride's dress and the table linens, lending a feminine and romantic touch. Not that good wedding cake needs improvement, but vintage forks with mother-of-pearl handles are a glamorous detail. Send guests home with pretty packages of chocolate truffles.

Board #494: Blackberries & Lemonade

Though blogging definitely has its perks, I miss the summers I had as a school teacher (or as a student for that matter). Right now I'm imagining a lazy summer afternoon, drinking lemonade, picking blackberries, reading a book outside - and all of those things have made their way into today's inspiration board. Serve a signature cocktail made with fresh-squeezed lemonade, and pull the color yellow into other details like the bridesmaid dresses, groom's attire, and bouquets. Use blackberry postage stamps to give your guests an idea of what's to come, include blackberries in your centerpieces (and even in bouquets and boutonnieres), serve blackberry pie instead of wedding cake, and send guests home with jars of blackberry jam. Finish it all off with some vintage touches, like a guest book fashioned from an old book cover, delicate lace parasols, and a fabulous vintage getaway car. I think it sounds like the perfect summer wedding - I mean really, can you imagine anything more summery or pleasant than sipping lemonade and lolling around in the grass?

Board #493: Blue & Spanish Moss

I'm willing to bet that I'm not the only bride who gets caught up in all of the zillions of pretty wedding things popping up all over the internet. It's so easy to feel overwhelmed, and to lose track of what's right for my own wedding - in going through my inspiration files, I realize that there are so many ideas I've saved that just plain don't fit with my own personal style. So I've been thinking about what exactly my personal style is, and I think if I had a motto* for my wedding it would be "timeless with a twist." Or maybe "classic not cookie cutter." I don't want to look back on my wedding twenty years from now and roll my eyes at how trendy it was, but I do want to feel like we made it our own. And though today's inspiration board is entirely different that what my own wedding will be (we're getting married in San Francisco in December, not in South Carolina in the spring), I think those two mottoes apply perfectly here.

(*I was going to say "aesthetic motto," but actually, this applies to our ceremony choices, too. Putting our personal touch on tradition.)

I was having so much fun thinking about where my honey and I might go on our honeymoon, and then we found out we might not be able to take one right away. So disappointing! But, one thing inspiration boards are good for (aside from helping to pull together a look for a wedding) is imagining, so I imagined up a trip to Hawaii...

Board #491: Peach and Pumpkins

When I get emails from readers asking for help with colors or details, I'm usually able to point them in the direction of previous posts that fit their specifications. But when Jacqui emailed me with her dilemma, I thought it would be fun to make an inspiration board based on her ideas. She knew she wanted: an October wedding at a rustic barn venue (complete with Hank Williams cover band), navy and gray as the palette base, white Cinderella pumpkins, and autumn flowers. But she was having trouble coming up with an accent color that wasn't orange or red, but still seasonal, and then seeing how it would all come together. I chose peach as a seasonal accent color - it's unexpected, certainly, but it works so well with those pretty white pumpkins, especially when it comes in the form of in-season dahlias. So here we go - my interpretation of Jacqui's vision.

Mood: soft and rustic

Board #490: Poppy & Mint

For the third inspiration board in my mini red, white and blue series, I thought something a little retro and sassy would be fun. How about a ruffled tea length dress and a blue birdcage veil for the bride? And lots of fun patterns in bold colors, on bridesmaid dresses, table runners and letterpress coasters. Board #489: A Summer Picnic

Another relaxed summer wedding inspiration board for you, with a touch of red, white and blue to continue this week's color motif. And what's more summery and Fourth-of-July than a picnic? Print save-the-dates or invites on brown paper lunch bags to give guests the idea of what's to come. Set up a swing and some lawn games, and maybe decorate with some paper lanterns hung in the trees. And again, if this idea seems too informal for a wedding, it would be perfect for a welcome party or rehearsal picnic luncheon.

Board #488: Lobster Red and Blueberry Pie

Yesterday was a perfect day here, and we enjoyed it by cooking out with some friends - I hope we'll have lots more days like that this summer! This week, I thought I'd post some red, white and blue inspiration boards, and I'm starting with this laid back lobster boil wedding. Get your guests in the spirit with lobster bib save-the-dates. How to make things both relaxed and lovely? For table numbers, tie tags around galvanized buckets filled with flowers, and for place cards, write guests' names on smooth stones. Serve up ice cream in paper cups with wooden spoons, and drinks with striped straws. Send guests home with lobster-shaped lollipops. And if this seems too casual for a wedding, how about a rehearsal dinner?

Board #487: Summer Honey

The beginning of a season is one of my favorite things - it always feels as though that season is the one I love most of all. Right now (of course) it's summer. I love the sunshine and how nice it is to be outside all day long. I love that cherries and berries are actually affordable and delicious. That dinner is always as simple as it gets, and rarely requires cooking that doesn't happen on a grill. And that it's light out until bedtime. So it's really no surprise that today's inspiration board is easy going and totally simple. Iced tea and honey jars, sun dresses and a picnic basket. Sounds like a delightful way to spend the day, whether or not you're getting married in the summer months.

Board #486: Strawberry and Seersucker

What could possibly be more summery than strawberries? Maybe seersucker? Though there aren't actually any seersucker photos in this inspiration board, the idea is there; I can just imagine the groom and his attendants wearing seersucker suits with white bucks. Strawberry red, pale pink, and cream make for a wedding color palette that's at once preppy and romantic, and totally appropriate for sunny summer afternoon. And for dessert? Wedding cake inspired by strawberry shortcake, of course!

Board #485: A Summer Afternoon

Backyards, lemonade, dancing under the stars - these are a few of my favorite summer things, and they're the inspiration for this summer wedding board. But the overall look isn't casual or slapdash - it's actually quite preppy and timeless. Parasols, fans, and hats are available for guests to keep cool at an outdoor ceremony. Flower girls wear dresses in an unexpected black and white gingham. Hand painted table numbers are a simple DIY touch. Buttercream cake and lemon meringue tartlets are sweetly simple desserts for a summer wedding at home. And if there happens to be a wraparound porch at your venue, wouldn't it be just perfect for the cocktail hour?

Board #484: Beach House Blue

I'm not sure why, but this lovely photo by Alicia Bock immediately sent my mind to a beach house-inspired wedding. Something with washed out blues and sun-bleached whites, beachy textures like linen and seashells, and a feel that is both lovely and relaxed. I'm really excited about our wedding plans, but I do love the idea of renting out a beach house for the weekend, and hosting all of our favorite people for a low-key wedding weekend. If you were to host a beach house wedding, where would it be?

Board #483: Lilac and Lemonade

Since this weekend marked the unofficial start of summer, it seemed time to post some summer wedding ideas. For today's inspiration board, I imagined a sweetly feminine garden party - something that would work just as well for a bridal shower as for a wedding. The palette is mostly pastels, with lilac and lavender, as well as barely-there sunlight yellow. A touch of deep plum purple adds sophistication. Mismatched glass bottles as bud vases aren't the most original idea, but purple glass is unexpected (and lovely). And how about the perfect recipe for this wedding - lavender lemonade.

Board #482: Magnolia & Graphite

One of the things I miss about living in Mississippi is the incredible magnolia trees. The magnolia trees that grow in other places I've lived just don't seem to get quite as many blossoms, but I guess that's why Mississippi is called the Magnolia State. They're such dramatic flowers, and they just smell so good! Kari Herer's beautiful magnolia photo and pencil illustration inspired today's simple wedding board, with shades of white and green and gray. I imagine chalkboards, zinc tags, and pencil drawings, accented with magnolia flowers, of course - pulled together, I think they create a look that's both vintage-inspired and totally fresh.

Board #481: Nude & Gray

I love neutrals. Just about everything in my home, or that I wear, is either white or beige or gray. Not particularly bold or exciting, but I think done well, neutrals can be anything you want them to be, whether it's cozy, stark, romantic or modern. All of that is just an extended way of introducing today's inspiration board, with its palette of modern neutrals. Shades of peachy nude and cement gray are at once modern and romantic, and I think it's an utterly sophisticated look. If you wanted to introduce a pop of color, I could see bringing in shots of bright orange or hot pink, or perhaps a deep plum purple.

I think the key to a vintage look for your wedding is to update it so that it doesn't look like a themed costume party. Though a flapper wedding could be really fabulous...

Board #478: What's Old is New

I recently read an article (cannot for the life of me remember where I read it) about the resurgence of vintage style, and the desire for artisan, hand-crafted things, and how almost anywhere you look you'll see anachronistic jumbles of designs and things reminiscent of bygone days. Not that I needed to read an article to tell me this, but it did get me thinking about how this trend is certainly present in the wedding world. That, combined with this film about the inspiring architecture and design firm, Roman & Williams, plus my desire to incorporate Root Liquor into an inspiration board, all led up to today's post. Not everything here comes from the same era or region, but there's a common thread in the palette and feel of each element, and I don't think any of it takes itself too seriously except for that love of hand-crafting and thoughtful design. It's all mostly somewhat masculine, but I think the tiniest bit of blush pink could balance it nicely.

This week's inspiration boards use simple palettes of a single color and white - orange and creme, blue and porcelain, lemon yellow and meringue. The elements here are pretty simple, too: bunting and tissue poms, ribbon wands, ruffles and roses. You don't have to reinvent the wheel to have a lovely wedding!
