Real Wedding Saturday: Shauna & Jeff

There are so many reasons that I love this August wedding, including that it took place about ten minutes from where I grew up. But even if you don't have that particular bias, I know you'll love it too - it's simple and lovely and thoughtfully done. The bride is a graphic designer at the fabulous Hello!Lucky, and the groom is a wine buyer for a local independent grocery chain. If that doesn't sound like a combination for a great wedding, then I don't know what does. Marla Aufmuth took these beautiful photos, and I think she captured the day perfectly! Christa Robinson of Eventus coordinated the wedding.

The wedding, with 145 guests, was held at the Headlands Center for the Arts, located in the Marin Headlands fifteen minutes north of San Francisco. The Center is a collection of restored historic military buildings, now used for artists' residencies and public programs.

Shauna wore the wedding dress her grandmother originally wore in 1953.

Jeff's suit is by Hugo Boss. The floral design was done by Mary Lois Hare at Loop Flowers, and included local, seasonal flowers.

Vintage handkerchiefs, purchased from a local flea market, were given out as guests entered the Westwing for the ceremony.

The ceremony space was decorated with tissue paper pom-poms made by the bride.

The bride and groom were married under a chuppah made by the bride's mother.

The ring pillow was made from a vintage handkerchief.

The ceremony was conducted by a childhood friend of the groom. The bride and groom were each escorted into the ceremony by their parents, as part of the Jewish tradition. The groom walked down the aisle to Johnny Cash's Walk the Line and the bride entered to God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. The recessional song was Hesitating Beauty by Wilco.

Shauna's bouquet included a cattleya orchid and was tied with a champagne ribbon.

I love this simple guest book - a little notebook and brown Le Pens.

The escort cards were labeled with a variety of funky handwriting styles.

I absolutely love this detail in the restroom! It's hilarious and beautiful - very Marcel Duchamp.

Dinner was held in a rustic dining hall with an open kitchen, so guests could watch the chefs at work.

Centerpieces were displayed in vintage blue glass mason jars found at a local flea market. Also, notice the mismatched chairs.

All stationery, inspired by vintage fabric, was designed by Shauna and printed at Hello!Lucky. You can even purchase the invitation suite for yourself!

The groom created a signature cocktail, Hitched Hooch, inspired by his Texas upbringing. The coasters with a cowboy boot stitch motif had the recipes printed on them: 6 mint leaves, 3 ounces peach nectar, 2 ounces ginger ale, 1 ounce bourbon, dash of bitters, half a lime.

All wines were paired and chosen by the groom.

All food was created and prepared by Chef Katie Powers from Katie Powers Catering, including passed appetizers, a salad course, family style dinner course and cheese course. Everything was made from local, seasonal ingredients.

Peach-blackberry cobblers were served in lieu of wedding cake.

Guests were encouraged to take home the centerpieces from dinner.

Congratulations Shauna and Jeff! Thank you so much for sharing this special day with Snippet & Ink, and thank you to Marla Aufmuth for sharing these beautiful photos!

Board #215: Pink and Black

I know this palette isn't anything new, but gosh it's pretty. And as Ariella Chezar said, "Pink can be so saccharine by itself, but it's sexy and moody when it's integrated with other colors." Need I say more?

Mood: elegant, dramatic
Palette: black, white, pale pink

Board #214: Down Home Black Tie

I hope everyone had a relaxing long weekend!

Today's board is an attempt to bring together contrasting elements, by placing an elegant, black-tie soiree in a rustic farm venue. The juxtaposition of the two things highlights them both: a crystal chandelier hanging in a knotty old tree, rose bouquets lined up along a weathered fence, bales of hay lit up after dark, muck boots and a tux. I imagine an old-timey string band during the cocktail hour, candelabras illuminating the barn, and blackberries mixed in with ranunculus. What elements would you incorporate to bring this wedding together?

Mood: sophisticated hoedown
Palette: green, white, black, pink

Real Wedding Saturday: Jennifer & Mark

Kella MacPhee sent over this fun April wedding in Ocean City, New Jersey, and I thought it was a great way to end a week of bright and bold wedding inspiration.

The ceremony was held at Saint Augustine's Roman Catholic Church. After the ceremony, these wreaths were moved to the doors at the reception site, The Flanders Hotel.

The ribbon on Jennifer's bouquet also held miniature picture frames, with photos in remembrance of her two grandfathers, aunt and uncle. The wedding was filled with thoughtful, meaningful details like this.

Jennifer's bouquet and Mark's boutonniere both contained seashells that she and Mark had collected on their first trip together to the Amalfi Coast. Tiny sand dollars were also included in the men's boutonnieres.

All of the bright and beautiful flowers (hydrangeas, tulips as a symbol of when Mark lived in Turkey, ranunculus, berries and blue tweedia) were done by Savannah's Garden.

Seashells, sea urchins, and star fish were a recurring motif, without being overdone.

All of the stationery was done by Jennifer's cousin, Melissa Bielecki with Spruce Avenue. Instead of having inserts, their invitations were in booklet form so that guests could keep all the information organized. For favors, guests took home Ocean City saltwater taffy.

Jennifer's grandparents, married for over fifty years, originally had this cake topper on their wedding cake. The cake, by The Pastry Prince, was orange creamsicle! It was served with creamsicle sodas in glass bottles with pink straws.

In lieu of a traditional guest book, Jennifer and Mark's guests wrote notes on Ocean City postcards. After the wedding, their wedding coordinator, Kristin Barse of Bel Momento, sent them back to Jennifer and Mark's home in Washington D.C.

After the ceremony, Jennifer changed out of high heels into pink Converse sneakers, purchased at Target.

Jennifer's gown and accessories, as well as her bridesmaids' dresses, all came from Adrian Pierce Couture, about which Jennifer could not say enough good things. Just listen to this story!

On the morning of our wedding, the hair and makeup person was finishing up and she said that she would need my veil. I began to panic because I immediately remembered that I didn't pick it up and I was pretty sure that no one else had either. After everyone confirmed that they did not have my veil, we called the dress shop and Brittany [one of the owners] confirmed that she had it there. She called her sister April who took a detour from Berlin, NJ to Ocean City, NJ (about 45 minutes away) to deliver my veil about 15 minutes or so before the ceremony was to begin!

One of the best things Jennifer said to me was I wish I could do it all over again because I loved every minute of the planning - isn't that exactly how you want to feel after your wedding? Thank you so much to Kella for sharing this wedding - your photos capture its fun spirit perfectly! - and congratulations to Jennifer and Mark! (And also, happy belated birthday to Jennifer!)
