Board #490: Poppy & Mint

For the third inspiration board in my mini red, white and blue series, I thought something a little retro and sassy would be fun. How about a ruffled tea length dress and a blue birdcage veil for the bride? And lots of fun patterns in bold colors, on bridesmaid dresses, table runners and letterpress coasters. For more inspiration in this color scheme, check out Joy's pretty post on "a medley of mint and tomato."

Board #489: A Summer Picnic

Another relaxed summer wedding inspiration board for you, with a touch of red, white and blue to continue this week's color motif. And what's more summery and Fourth-of-July than a picnic? Print save-the-dates or invites on brown paper lunch bags to give guests the idea of what's to come. Set up a swing and some lawn games, and maybe decorate with some paper lanterns hung in the trees. And again, if this idea seems too informal for a wedding, it would be perfect for a welcome party or rehearsal picnic luncheon.

Mood: breezy summer picnic
Palette: brown, green, red, pale blue

Board #488: Lobster Red and Blueberry Pie

Yesterday was a perfect day here, and we enjoyed it by cooking out with some friends - I hope we'll have lots more days like that this summer! This week, I thought I'd post some red, white and blue inspiration boards, and I'm starting with this laid back lobster boil wedding. Get your guests in the spirit with lobster bib save-the-dates. How to make things both relaxed and lovely? For table numbers, tie tags around galvanized buckets filled with flowers, and for place cards, write guests' names on smooth stones. Serve up ice cream in paper cups with wooden spoons, and drinks with striped straws. Send guests home with lobster-shaped lollipops. And if this seems too casual for a wedding, how about a rehearsal dinner?

Mood: relaxed, preppy
Palette: driftwood, pale blue, lobster red

Craft Night!

Check it out! The fabulous Jordan Ferney invited me to join the first monthly Craft Night at her studio in San Francisco, 7/8. I can't wait! See more details at Jordan's blog.

Happy Weekend!

This week involved a lot of catching up on emails and blogging, but I think I'm starting to make a dent. My goal is to set a good schedule for myself, so that I have some time to enjoy the summer, because (and I think anyone who's self-employed will agree) it's just so easy to never stop working! So, I'm trying to be a better time manager, to make time for things like the farmers market and art exhibits and trips up or down the coast.

The other thing I want to make time for, and that I'm just so excited about, is starting to plan our wedding ceremony. As much as I'm having fun thinking about all the little design details, choosing readings and music for our ceremony and talking with our officiant about what we want for our wedding really reminds me of why we're planning this event in the first place (and it makes me feel not so bummed out about the fact that getting married in December means no garden roses). I'll probably talk more about all of this more down the road, but for now we're really just getting started. How are you going about planning your wedding ceremony? Any great readings or resources that I just have to know about?

{via At its best}

The other thing I've been doing is catching up on my blog reading, so I've got loads of links for you to enjoy!

A recipe for radishes in soil.

Custom Scout Books would make the cutest favors.

Charming vintage paper crafts and incredible paper flowers.

Urban picnic.

Green rooftops, via paper tastebuds.

Loving these wedding portraits. And that dress!

Yikes!

Hoping to find rhubarb at the farmers market this weekend (I don't know about you, but I prefer my rhubarb pie unadulterated. No strawberries, thank you very much.).

Someone please buy this amazing vintage tropical fabulous dress...

Love this desert wedding - that last pic is an especially good wedding day reminder.

Poster on a stick, via Twig & Thistle.

A menagerie of clutches, via Kris Atomic.

Computer icons as stationery.

Rugs inspired by the view out your airplane window.

It's a mod, mod wedding.

A delicious map.

Sunrise engagement shoot.

I really love the chalkboard place mats.

Even though we just spent three days moving cross-country, I'm still thinking my summer needs a road trip.

Cheerful yellow business cards.

I dig The Sartorialist, but this is too funny.

Seersucker invitations are perfect for summer.

These shoes want to live on my feet, via Santa Barbara Chic.

Socks for your bridesmaids.

Is there anything cuter than vintage baby Nikes?

Knots in a frame
.

I want one so bad.

Well lovelies, have a wonderful weekend. I hope you get a chance to enjoy some sunshine!

PS - I just remembered something! Tomorrow is our would-be wedding date, if we hadn't decided to put things on hold. We were planning on getting married at my family's summer home in Montana, where it's supposed to storm. Funny how things work out... I think my honey and I will go out for dinner here in San Fran, instead.

Real Wedding: Laura & Colin

Today's charming Midwestern wedding feels like summer, with a rustic, woodsy camp vibe that I love. Laura (an event planner out of Minnesota) and Colin chose this private lodge in northern Wisconsin for their Friday wedding not just because of it's beautiful location, but also because the bride's family has rented it out every summer for 50 years. Photos by Jennifer Cress.

Laura tied vintage floral fabric on the wedding programs.

Colin is a professional brewer (beer maker, not baseball player), so he made his own beer to serve on-tap and in bottles for guests to take home.

Both the bride's bouquet and the groom's boutonniere incorporated barley hops, a nod to the groom's profession. Laura's dress was a cocktail dress purchased off the rack and lined with an ivory slip.

A hand-drawn map directed guests to lawn games (like horseshoes), canoe rides, a cigar cabin, and firepit.

Venue: private lodge in Brule River, Wisconsin

Bride's dress / shoes: Off 5th / My Glass Slipper

Groom's suit: Nordstrom

Flowers: A Day in Provence

Stationery: Lunalux

Thank you to Laura and Colin, and thank you to Jennifer Cress for sending over the photos of their lovely wedding!

Board #487: Summer Honey

The beginning of a season is one of my favorite things - it always feels as though that season is the one I love most of all. Right now (of course) it's summer. I love the sunshine and how nice it is to be outside all day long. I love that cherries and berries are actually affordable and delicious. That dinner is always as simple as it gets, and rarely requires cooking that doesn't happen on a grill. And that it's light out until bedtime. So it's really no surprise that today's inspiration board is easy going and totally simple. Iced tea and honey jars, sun dresses and a picnic basket. Sounds like a delightful way to spend the day, whether or not you're getting married in the summer months.

Mood: sweetness and light
Palette: sunshine, honey, wheat

Board #486: Strawberry and Seersucker

What could possibly be more summery than strawberries? Maybe seersucker? Though there aren't actually any seersucker photos in this inspiration board, the idea is there; I can just imagine the groom and his attendants wearing seersucker suits with white bucks. Strawberry red, pale pink, and cream make for a wedding color palette that's at once preppy and romantic, and totally appropriate for sunny summer afternoon. And for dessert? Wedding cake inspired by strawberry shortcake, of course!

Mood: romantic, preppy, sweet summer
Palette: strawberry red, pink lemonade

Real Wedding: Michele & Dave

Amanda Bevington shared this fun and sunny wedding with me, and it seemed like the perfect way to brighten up a Monday. Michele and Dave invited around 100 guests to join them at their April wedding at the beautiful Stone Manor in Malibu. The day was full of vintage and rustic elements, with a modern and playful twist.

Dave owns a t-shirt company, Detroit Sprinkles, and they designed graphics for custom out-of-town guest bags, and screen printed them on canvas totes from American Apparel.

Michele and Dave chose Beatles songs for their ceremony: "Here, There and Everywhere," "In My Life," and "Here Comes the Sun."

Vintage salt and pepper shakers make for a darling "love bird" cake topper! Their cake was from SusieCakes (just a side note: they make one of my very favorite cakes of all time, a marble layer cake with chocolate chips and two types of buttercream frosting...).

To create a flea market vintage look for the wedding, Michele collected vintage linens, lace, and a variety of jars and vases, including mason jars, babyfood jars, and glass milk bottles. She found many of these items at the reDiscover Center.

Guests enjoyed passed desserts like mini root beer floats and ice cream sandwiches.

From Michele: "Don't let anyone talk you into doing your wedding 'the way it's always done.' Our DJ didn't play one slow song, and it was amazing - people were dancing all night! We didn't cut the cake or have a bouquet toss - we had a party with all of our closest people that was intimate and magical. Remember to be present and have fun. And breathe."

Venue: Stone Manor in Malibu, California (310-457-6285)

Invitations: Urbanic Paper Boutique

Welcome tote bag: Detroit Sprinkles

Bride's dress / shoes: Monique Lhuillier / Badgley Mischka

Groom's suit / tie: Tonello (purchased at Traffic Los Angeles, 310-659-4313) / Theory

Groom's shoes / socks: Hugo Boss / American Apparel

Flowers: La Partie Events

Cake: SusieCakes

Congratulations Michele and Dave! And thank you to the talented Amanda Bevington for sharing these photos with us - check out even more pics from Michele and Dave's wedding over on Amanda's blog.
