Board #136: Olive Garden

There are the island destination weddings, but what about an Italian villa? That's what I imagined here, with olive leaves, vineyards, a courtyard reception, and that incredible Zac Posen dress. And you all know how much I love a green and white wedding.

Mood: old world charm
Palette: green, gold, white

Board #135: ¡Felicidades!

Diane wanted a board to help her pull together her vintage Mexican inspired wedding. Her colors are white, red, and aqua, and she wants to incorporate Mexican traditions to celebrate her and her fiance's heritage. To fit the bill, this board includes Mexican wedding cookie favors, white papeles picados, and a tequila bar among other things. I would also have galvanized tubs of Mexican sodas, like Jarritos and Peñafiel, and if I could have found better images I would have made sure to include white tissue paper flowers.

Board #134: Wedding in the Woods

I saw this gorgeous necklace, made with a quail egg lined with gold leaf, and I immediately thought of the dessert buffet from Katie and Ian's wedding featured in the Fall 2007 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings. From those two points of inspiration I came up with this wedding befitting a wood nymph princess.

Board #133: Raney's Tennessee Wedding

Raney is a friend of my dear friend Elizabeth, and she's getting married in September in Tennessee. As far as the wedding goes, Raney's way more excited about being married to the love of her life than planning all the details - which, if you're going to be excited about one or the other, is definitely the way to go. And there's people like me who love the details, so that works out well! I hope this board is helpful to you, Raney!

Can This Outfit Be Turned Into A Wedding?

Check out my ongoing project with Martha B. at Nibs - inspired by the Domino feature "Can this outfit be turned into a room?" we thought we'd try to create a wedding inspired by an outfit. Here's the outfit from J. Crew, and for the next few Mondays, Martha B. will post our inspired finds... See it here.

Board #132: Lauren's Country Club Wedding

Lauren is in the interesting position of holding her reception at the same location where two weeks later her good friend will be having her own wedding! She wants a traditional wedding, in apricot and green hues, and needed some inspiration for making it stand out from her friend's wedding. Passing out miniature desserts (like the cotton candy here, or tiny milkshakes, or miniature pies) is a unique way to end dinner. A golf cart as a getaway car is a fun and slightly different way to depart.

Mood: classic with a twist
Palette: apricot, pale green

Board #131: Ariella-Inspired, Part Three

In this dramatic centerpiece, Ariella included lemons, black elderberries and cattleya orchids. Black and yellow are such a bold pairing, so I imagined this board was for a couple with bold style, while at the same time incorporating traditional details.

Mood: bold romance

Board #129: Ariella-Inspired, Part One

Each of the three boards I will post today draws its inspiration from one of three arrangements by Ariella Chezar that appeared in the Winter 2007 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings, in a spread called "Centerpieces with Fruit and Flowers."

This board was created for Cole, a bride with a distinct and original idea of what she wants for her wedding. With a bespoke tweed suit for the groom, and a blend of Edwardian and roaring 20's style for the bride, a love of birds and books, and a band composed of the couple's friends, I wanted to pull together a board that would reflect the couple's unique style as well as the rustic venue. Ariella's centerpiece, which includes plums, pears and roses, seemed like a good focal point.

Mood: distinctive romance
Palette: red, purple, green, brown

A Chat with Ariella Chezar

Some of you may have noticed that there are a few sources and vendors that I return to time and again in my inspiration boards. The brilliant and talented Ariella Chezar of Ariella Chezar Design is one of those people. When you see the lush, organic beauty of her work it is easy to understand why she is a frequent contributer to bridal magazines, and today we're lucky enough to have her stop by and answer a few questions!

Snippet & Ink: On your website, it says that you are inspired by a flower growing in its natural state. What else inspires you in your designs?
Ariella Chezar: Nature in general, both cultivated and wild, never ceases to inspire me. I am inspired by color and beauty. Whether it's the early grey winter light on a field, an amazing painting, a stunning couture dress or one of your inspiration boards! Anything that takes my breath away.

S&I: I love that you say art and life can be intertwined. Who are some of your favorite artists (either in the traditional sense, or otherwise)?
AC: Rousseau, Rothko, Botticelli, Lucinda Williams, Bach, Shakespeare, Pablo Casals - it is a very long list.

S&I: What kinds of things do you consider when creating an arrangement for a client's wedding?
AC: The three most important things to consider are my client's vision, the overall feel/style of the location, and which flowers are at their peak. I feel like it's my job to show my clients in their best light. To understand their vision well enough that I create what they would if they could.

S&I: What is the best part of your job?
AC: There are so many bests! I love stepping into other people's minds for awhile and helping them put together a beautiful night. I love working with flowers - who could ask for a better medium! I love growing many flowers that I use. I love color. I love working with my team of designers - we have the best time. I love sourcing beautiful props and decor items. I love bringing the bride her bouquet as she's getting ready.

S&I: What should a bride look for when choosing a floral designer?
AC: She should choose someone who listens well and whose work she loves.

S&I: What advice would you give to a bride whose budget doesn't allow for the flowers she imagines?
AC: Focus the budget where it will have the most impact. Personal flowers matter because you will see them in the pictures forever after. Centerpieces are important because your guests spend a lot of time looking at them during dinner. If you can't do anything else, have lovely centerpieces and personal flowers.

S&I: Your book, Flowers for the Table, is gorgeous. Do you have any upcoming projects or publications that we should look out for?
AC: I have a few things cooking, but nothing definite yet. My most recent press can be seen in the current issue of Modern Bride.

S&I: One of the events highlighted on your website is your 30th birthday party. If you were to give a party for yourself right now, what would the flowers look like?
AC: Probably much more subdued. I'm still obsessed with green, always have been and probably always will be, but I'm very tired of pink with green. I would probably time the event around tree peonies - June locally, or October when they come up from New Zealand. I can't get enough of this spectacular flower, they just blow my mind.

Ariella, thank you so much for taking the time to stop by Snippet & Ink! Your work is such an inspiration, and it is clear that you truly love what you do.

For fun, I have created three inspiration boards based on three of my favorite arrangements by Ariella. Check in later to see them!

Board #128: Gray and Yellow

I made a marigold and gray board awhile ago, but I have to say that it's not one of my favorites. I've had a few more requests for a gray and yellow board, this time in more muted tones, and I think this one turned out nicely. The pale grays and yellows make me think of rain clouds and sunshine, like the beginning of spring maybe. And I cannot get over that incredible church designed by Maxim Velcovsky - the modern chairs work perfectly in the gorgeous old space.

Mood: subdued elegance
Palette: pale gray, pale sunshiny yellow, white

Board #126: Seersucker and Baker's Twine

I am finding that I really only like red in very small doses, such as in this board. It's such a dominant, powerful color that a little goes a long way (I mean, there's not much red here, but see how different this board is from the all-white one I posted yesterday?). Those balloons with the number tags, from the wedding of the associate style editor for Martha Stewart Weddings, are one of my favorite examples of a non-floral centerpiece. So simple yet so dramatic. Bakers' twine and seersucker were the inspirations for that wedding, and I tried to continue that look here. I could easily see this as a summer beachfront event where all the guests wear white or seersucker...

Board #124: Classic White

I know that Classic Bride is planning an elegant, all-white wedding, so I thought I put an elegant, all-white board together. I haven't made one like this in awhile, and I'm not sure I've ever made one that wasn't blatantly winter-themed.

Board #123: Anthropologie's Spring Palette

Several bloggers have posted recently about Anthropologie's new palette for spring, and I thought it would be fun to do a board based on such fun pops of color. Using Nicole's post as a starting point, here's the board I came up with:

Mood: bright-eyed and bushy-tailed
Palette: bright yellow, orange, blue, and some hints of green

Board #122: Faded Wallpaper

Weird title, I know. But the photo from Rebecca Thuss' portfolio (the large one in the corner) is so beautiful, and I love the sort of aged wallpaper behind the bride, and that was the main inspiration behind this board. And I know I just used that bouquet by Ariella Chezar, but it worked so well in this board! Also, I'm so sorry about posting so late in the day lately - I'll try to get it together to post earlier in the morning...

Board #121: A Jane Austen Wedding

In my dreaming of spring, I thought I'd put together a little Regency-era, Emma-inspired board. Of course, you'd need to add a top hat for the groom and a horse-drawn carriage in place of a getaway car.

Board #120: Beijing to Boston

Jessica wanted some help creating a board that was summery, fun, with the honeydew green of her bridesmaid dresses, but that also incorporated red in order to celebrate her and her fiance's Chinese heritage. To steer clear of Christmas-in-July territory, I used red just as an accent, and added some pale pink to soften things up. I thought that a nice way to bring in red was by using red string, maybe to tie up envelopes, and using traditional Chinese knots in some places (maybe as an addition to seating cards, or napkin ties) - a play on "tying the knot." Also, to play up the "Beijing-to-Boston" theme that Jessica mentioned, I like the idea of a save-the-date that has a map on it, with lines connecting any important locations for the couple and their families.

Mood: fresh and bright
Palette: honeydew green, pale pink, lucky red

Board #119: Berry Bliss

So sorry about the late post today!

Aimee met her fiance at a farmers' market, so she wants to incorporate some seasonal fruit into her wedding. She also wants to include global details to reflect her experiences in Africa and the Middle East, as well as her fiance's Vietnamese heritage and time spent in the South Pacific. In my mind, food is one of the best ways to incorporate global details. Have hors d'oeuvres and edible favors that bring to mind other food traditions. Also, Aimee has some beautiful Vietnamese silk lanterns from her fiance's parents, and I think she should definitely hang them in the trees, possibly along with some long cuts of colorful ribbon. Another idea is to have something (maybe the word "love") translated in all the languages Aimee wants represented, and have those either be the names of tables, or printed on napkins and matchbooks. Here is my board for Aimee, with summer berries and loose, natural floral arrangements (Ariella Chezar is brilliant at this type of arrangement, as is Michaele Thunen).

Board #118: Emerging Thoughts

Stephanie Nikolopoulos interviewed me for an article she was writing for the style website, Emerging Thoughts. Check out her article here (my quote is toward the end). She also asked if I could come up with a board that reflected the style of Emerging Thoughts, "an online boutique filled with unique and one of a kind pieces" that seeks to "promote free thinking and creativity." What do I think a board based on the style of Emerging Thoughts would look like? I think it would look like the couple are putting together a party that expresses who they are without worrying too much about fitting anyone else's expectation of what a wedding should be. It would be unique because the couple is unique, not because they're trying too hard to do something that's never been done. And hopefully it would incorporate the creative talents of not only the couple, but also of important people in their life.

Board #117: Amanda's Blue & Yellow Wedding

Amanda's color scheme is so sweet and classic. She wanted a board that was Tiffany blue and lemon yellow, and that reflected the casually elegant feel she imagines for her wedding. I love the potted flowers used on the table in that big photo, and the tiers of small ruffly cakes are so pretty!

Board #116: Sweet Tarts for Sweethearts

This color palette is too fun, hence the title. Melissa is getting married at a country club, and her colors are pink, green, teal and orange. There's a lot to work with there, and it's easy to be overwhelmed by so many fabulous colors, so I tried to pull them together in a way that was fun without looking psychedelic. Pam's gorgeous bouquet has made an appearance in one of my previous boards, but it was too perfect not to be the main inspiration for this board.

Board #114: Red Velvet

Tyler's sweet friend over at Pretty Little Things requested this board for her: a chic, fall wedding with fall colors and a red velvet cake. In order to keep things from feeling rustic (harder than you might imagine with those fall colors!), I used the red velvet cake as my focus point, so I ended up with a red, white, and chocolate palette. I hope this board is helpful for you Tyler!

Keep It Simple

Lisa over at Blush just let me know that Snippet & Ink made it onto the list of favorite blogs on the new Real Simple wedding blog, Nearly Wed! I can't tell you how exciting this is for me, because Real Simple is one of my all-time favorite magazines. I have yet to check out their new wedding edition (available at Crate & Barrel), but from what I've seen of it, it looks just as lovely and achievable as the monthly magazine.

Not A Contest

For those of you worried that your wedding isn't big enough, or unique enough, or whatever, take a look at this post by Offbeat Bride. It's a nice reminder that your wedding day isn't about out-doing other brides, but rather about expressing who you and your fiance really are, sharing your special day with the people who matter most to you, and getting to spend forever with someone you love.

Board #113: Farmers' Market

I've been wanting to put together a farmers' market inspired board for awhile, and I finally have enough images to make it work. Fruit is a wonderful non-floral point of inspiration, and I think this board proves that vegetables are, too.

Mood: flavorful, bountiful, rustic
Palette: red, yellow, green

Update!

Of course I only became aware of this fabulous cake by Bakery Bar after posting my Farmers' Market board.

2008 Bloggies

Being relatively new to the whole blogging scene, I hadn't heard about the Bloggie awards until I read about them on one of my absolute favorite blogs, Smitten Kitchen. In case you also hadn't heard about them, I thought I'd pass along the information to you. Voting ends Friday, January 11. I will definitely be taking the time to nominate my favorite blogs (wink wink). . .

Board #108: A Midsummer Night's Dream

This board is for Ann, who sent in such a lovely request. She wanted some help figuring out how to pull together a romantic, feminine event that still fits with the Navy dress whites many of the men will be wearing. Her wedding will be after dark, and she wants to incorporate calla lilies, ostrich feathers, coconut cake, and varying shades of purple ribbon. To make her "Midsummer Night's Dream" vision work with these various elements, I used a palette of white and purples. Ann was also concerned that, as a New Yorker getting married in the South, she wouldn't have a good sense of what makes up Southern style. Honestly, I think this is an event that could work just about anywhere. . .what do you think? If this palette seems too dark, I would incorporate more greenery. Some other alternatives are coconut cupcakes in place of a large cake, more lavender and less plum, and lanterns instead of strings of lights.

Board #106: A Grand Ballroom Affair

Cami wrote me to request some help in pulling together a board for her April wedding at the Atlanta History Center's grand ballroom. Her bridesmaid dresses are brown, and she wants mostly white and green flowers with splashes of pink. There are so many wonderful ways to pull those colors together, so I used the photo Cami sent of her venue as the starting point. What an incredible space! The nicest thing about having a venue like this is that because it's so beautiful on it's own, centerpieces are really the only decorating that needs to happen.

Mood: ballroom elegance
Palette: white, brown, green, pink

Board #103: Lemon and Iris

I cannot get over the gorgeous centerpiece by Michaele Thunen (by far one of the most talented people that I know) that really is the central element in this board. And how wonderful would it be to have lemon pies and blackberry tarts in lieu of the traditional wedding cake.

Mood: elegant countryside
Palette: yellow, purple, greens

Board #102: Preppy Miami

I was lucky enough to have breakfast with all of my girlfriends from high school over the holidays, and my dear Kathleen wanted me to make a board for her (just for fun, of course!). For her, I imagine a wedding that blends classic preppy style with a little Miami flair.

Mood: vibrant, preppy
Palette: pink, white, navy
