Real Wedding: Lilly & John

It's always so fun to learn about a wedding venue that I didn't know about before, like the Penthouse at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel. Lilly and John were joined by 90 guests for their wedding at the historic venue. The couple wanted their wedding to feel like a chic cocktail party in a fabulous apartment, with amazing food, an amazing location and amazing views. The ceremony took place on the balcony overlooking San Francisco, after which guests were able to explore the penthouse, playing pool in the billiards room, nibbling on hors d'oeuvres in the living room, and dancing in the dining room.

Says Lilly, "We pretended that we were throwing a party at our apartment which was super helpful with focusing our attention on what we really wanted, instead of the many wedding things that everyone says you must have. We decided there would be no walking down the aisle, no first dance and no sit-down dinner. And that we definitely wanted black tie, amazing food and definitely Russian vodka!"

How amazing is this Persian-inspired billiards room?

Framed photos of Lilly, John and their families were placed around the penthouse to give it a lived-in feel. Pink peonies were arranged in vases throughout.

To honor her Russian heritage, Lilly and her family made flavored vodka which was served from an ice bar, which featured iced shot glasses and a selection of caviar. Pink cocktail napkins which were personalized with celebratory Russian sayings.

Board #485: A Summer Afternoon

Backyards, lemonade, dancing under the stars - these are a few of my favorite summer things, and they're the inspiration for this summer wedding board. But the overall look isn't casual or slapdash - it's actually quite preppy and timeless. Parasols, fans, and hats are available for guests to keep cool at an outdoor ceremony. Flower girls wear dresses in an unexpected black and white gingham. Hand painted table numbers are a simple DIY touch. Buttercream cake and lemon meringue tartlets are sweetly simple desserts for a summer wedding at home. And if there happens to be a wraparound porch at your venue, wouldn't it be just perfect for the cocktail hour?

Mood: equal parts preppy, vintage, backyard elegance
Palette: black and white, lemon meringue, garden green

Board #474: Hot Pink & India Ink

Can you think of another color that's more fun than hot pink? Pair it with ink black, and it becomes utterly cool, and even a little sexy. I mean, how fabulous would a bride look in Jennifer Behr's sassy headband? This palette certainly lends itself to a more modern look, but here it takes on a vintage/retro vibe.

Board #467: Bold as Love

This inspiration board was inspired entirely by the bedroom designed by Eddie Ross - that saturated yellow of the wall and the lamp, the totally sheer pink of the bed linens, the pretty pattern on the screen, and the matte black of the lampshade. The result is, I think, a boldly modern - and sweetly romantic - palette and look.

Board #464: Black Slate and Spring

Doesn't this green remind you of the tiny leaf buds that start popping out in early spring? Inspired by this stunning photo of Vera Wang's green dress, I thought black slate (a sort of chalkboard gray) and leaf bud green would be a lovely and unexpected Spring palette, and a nice choice for the first inspiration board of March. It has a slightly modern feel that balances sweetly romantic details like bows and springerle cookies and vines, and I think it could work in a wide range of venues from an historic estate to an industrial loft.

Mood: romance with a modern twist

Board #453: Tuxedo & Mint

This inspiration board didn't start out with an accent color, but there is the slightest hint of mint green on the walls of Lisa Lefkowitz's photograph, and that inspired the rest of these image choices. I imagine a chic cocktail party, or (yet again) a champagne and dessert reception. Though it may take place in a gorgeous mansion, and though the men may be in black tie attire, formality is no reason to exclude whimsical touches, such as calligraphy cootie catchers or a sweet snack of hot beignets. Though they are certainly not major elements in any wedding, they're a fun touch if you feel up to executing them.

Mood: polished, sweet
Palette: tuxedo black, crisp white, a touch of mint green

Board #449: Modern Vintage Circus

Once again I've repeated a few favorites here, namely the large balloons with number tags from Randi Brookman Harris' wedding, and the black and white bouquet by Artfool (now Matthew Robbins Design). What can I say, they're favorites! I actually started with the intention of creating an all-white winter wedding inspiration board based around this gorgeous dress by Elizabeth Dye, but I think what I ended up with here is much more fun. Inspired by vintage circus ephemera and details, from the balloons to the souvenir card to the popcorn, this is a modern take on that look. Mostly white, with just a few well-edited dabs of black for contrast, it's both whimsical and chic.

Mood: chic modern whimsy, with a touch of vintage circus inspiration
Palette:
glassine white, ink black

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: white dress with ruffled waist by Elizabeth Dye, balloons with number tags from Martha Stewart Weddings, Papermade stationery with black and white twine photo by Max Wanger via Style Me Pretty
Row 2: coconut chocolate cupcake photo by Victoria Pearson, white lemonade with straw flags from Amy Atlas
Row 3: black and white bouquet with sweet peas and privet berries by Artfool, vintage souvenir postcard, balloon ceremony photo by W. Scott Chester
Row 4: popcorn in glassine bags styled by Erin Quon, white piano from Janny Panns' flickr, milk glass cake stands from Martha Stewart via Classic Bride, vintage alphabet garland from Chronicle Books

This inspiration board is, I hope, further evidence that having a simple, and even budget-friendly,* wedding doesn't have to mean sacrificing style. The decor is mostly large white balloons (which can be found for under $3 each), some touches of black and white twine ($15 for 240 yards), and milk glass cake stands (check eBay and flea markets for these). The only flowers are in the bride's bouquet (and possibly the groom's boutonniere). Even the darling alphabet garland is only $13, and which could be used for any number of things (and used again and again after the wedding!).

A reception with cupcakes, lemonade or punch, and popcorn will cost far less than just about any other option. There is no rule that says you have to serve your guests a full meal (though if you don't, make sure to hold your wedding in between meal times); in fact, for the longest time, a cake and punch reception immediately following the ceremony was standard. I think it's tough these days when, so often, many or most wedding guests are coming from out of town to attend, and it seems as though you ought to serve them a full meal at the reception - this is certainly something my honey and I have struggled with. But if that's not your style, or if it's just not in your budget, cake and punch, or dessert and champagne, is perfectly acceptable, especially if it means you can afford to have all of the people you love there with you to celebrate.

(*In fact, "simple" and "budget-friendly" are not the same thing. It can cost an awful lot of money to have a simply elegant wedding, and it can cost no money at all to lose sight of simplicity.)

Board #441: Keep It Simple

It's been a month since I posted any inspiration boards, but they're back! Lately I've found myself drawn to the idea of simpler, smaller weddings - think city hall ceremony followed by a dinner party reception at your favorite restaurant - so that's what we have here today. But simple doesn't have to mean sacrificing style - there are so many ways to add whimsy and personality to simple wedding plans without going crazy or over-the-top. Posters are an unexpected way to invite your guests to celebrate with you, and quirky hand-lettered envelopes add to their uniqueness. Pale pink candles make for chic centerpieces, especially when displayed in modern glass candlesticks that you can gift to your guests when they head home. And instead of traditional wedding cake, see if your reception venue/caterers will work with you to hand out small servings of cotton candy.

Mood: simple city hall chic

Board #439: Mercury Glass and Whimsy

Another Halloween-inspired wedding board for you today, though again I tried to keep it from being too obvious. The palette is elegantly whimsical - fitting for both a black tie affair and a Halloween soiree. Silver jack-o-lanterns set the mood, though nothing overly shiny and new - mercury glass has a tarnished look to it that's just perfect here. Black polka dots on a white backdrop are wonderfully fun. Make table numbers key players in centerpieces, by creating number collections under a bell jar: glittered numbers, dominoes, playing cards all let guests know where to sit. I couldn't find any great images for this, but I think that silver glittered spider webs could be a nice touch - maybe as favors for your guests.

Mood: elegantly eerie whimsy

Board #438: October Whimsy

Inspiration boards are back! If you want to give a bit of Halloween flair to your October wedding, without going all the way with jack-o-lanterns and candy corn, black-and-white stripes, checks, and silhouettes are the right color and add a certain whimsy. Just the smallest touches of orange make it a truly Halloween palette. But not a pumpkin in sight!

Board #426: Pink and Fig

Not all autumn weddings have to include rustic oranges and browns. Though the palette in today's wedding board could work for almost any season, it draws its inspiration from early autumn fruit. Slice open a fig, and you'll find the colors used here: nearly black-blue and sweet pale pink, which I've paired with deep plum red to make it more appropriate for fall. Available in early autumn, dahlias and garden roses come in an endless variety of colors - blush pink is perfect for the wedding I have in mind here.

Board #424: Retro Yellow, Black & White

Hi all! I hope everyone had a nice long weekend. My friend's wedding was just beautiful, and it was great to get home to San Francisco for a couple days. I'm headed back to Austin today, so I might be a bit slow (yes, even slower than usual) getting back to emails. But I promise I'll catch up as quickly as possible!

When I first saw the beautiful floral pieces by Emersonmade, I knew I'd be incorporating them into some inspiration boards - they're irresistible! The black and white checked tie with the cute yellow carnation pinned to it inspired this wedding board which includes retro elements and a bold yellow, black and white color scheme. It would work in spring or summer, but I'd love to see it as an autumn wedding - there's almost a bit of a back-to-school feel to it that I just love!

Board #413: Black and Pearl

You know that faintest hint of blush that shows up on some pearls? That's what I think of when I see this palest pink. Pair it with just enough strokes of black to make it edgy - fun for a sassy wedding palette!

Board #384: Gingham in the Garden

It must be that it's springtime, because I just can't bring myself to create any indoor inspiration boards right now! I know I've posted several other green and black and white boards before, but ever since seeing Coty Farquhar's gorgeous afternoon tea post, I couldn't wait to put something together that incorporated black and white gingham into a casual garden wedding. From the groom's casual shirt, to the checkered tablecloth, to the ribbons around honey jar favors and hanging flowers, black and white gingham is somehow both totally laid back and still refined. Maybe it will be the new damask...

Oh, and happy happy birthday little sister! I LOVE YOU!

Board #376: French Flair

Another color palette that I've yet to tire of - I hope you still love it, too! Something about this inspiration board transports me to Paris... A mostly white and very pale gray background is accented with butter yellow and black. Stripes add a touch of whimsy: package favors in striped boxes, wrap your bouquet with a striped ribbon, decorate with classic striped hat boxes. Incorporate figs and blackberries into your floral elements for a touch of black that isn't overly sleek or stark.

Mood: whimsical French chic
Palette: butter yellow, black, pale gray, white

Board #370: Vegas Baby!

If I were going to elope to Las Vegas, you can bet I'd splurge on a pair of sparkly Louboutin's, take some photos at the Neon Boneyard, and grab a burger at In-N-Out after the ceremony. If there were guests involved, why not go all out with a playing card/dice/poker chip motif and an Elvis impersonator? Retro rock and roll at its best.

Board #358: Budget Friendly #21, Playful Minimalism

If your style is more playful and modern than fussy and traditional, then a city hall ceremony followed by a restaurant reception might be the wedding for you. Holding your ceremony at city hall not only imbues a certain low-key mood to your wedding, but it is also a way to stay within your budget - there are no ceremony decorations to buy, no programs to print out, and no attendant flowers to pay for. Asking guests to celebrate with you at a favorite restaurant also has its advantages: many restaurants won't charge you a site fee; you won't have to rent tables, chairs and linens; and it's a great place to return to for anniversaries! For this budget wedding board, I imagined a quirky, playful couple with minimalist sensibilities...

Mood: playfully minimalist
Palette: blackboard, concrete, chalk

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: photo by 5ive15ifteen, chalkboard from Martha Stewart Weddings, jacket and tie from Nordstrom
Row 2: invitation by Mr. Boddington's Studio from Minted, chalkboard candle via EmilyStyle, city hall ceremony via {frolic!}
Row 3: shoes photo by Michelle Armas, dress by Thread, restaurant photo from Modern Restaurant Seating, white sparkling jasmine Golden Star Tea
Row 4: chocolate lemon tart from Cannelle et Vanille, save-the-date by Justin Pocta, cymbidium nosegays from Martha Stewart Weddings

The Paper: Get clever with your save-the-dates and take a photo of yourselves - no professional necessary. You can turn them into cards on Shutterfly for as little as 45-cents apiece. If you've always dreamed of letterpress invitations, but feel constrained by a budget, design your own with a unique font and have Mercurio Brothers print them up for as little as $1.50 each when you order 150.

The Fashion: Some designers are now offering what they call "bridal alternatives," which can be great budget-friendly options - this dress by Thread is only $375. With some tulle or netting for as little as $2 a yard, you can save by making your own veil. Vintage ribbon, clip on earrings, or silk flowers are all great ways to dress-up and personalize plain shoes without overspending. For the groom, this jacket and tie are a bit of a splurge, but if they fit his personality and are something he will wear again, then they're worth the extra expense.

The Decor: Cover candle holders with chalkboard paint, and write table numbers on them. Not only is it a clever way to let guests know where to sit, but candles are a great way to warm up a modern space without breaking the bank. You could also paint flower pots (filled with live paperwhites or orchids) and write guests' names on them.

The Flowers: If you'd prefer floral centerpieces to candles, consider a single potted orchid on each table. You can find them for under $20, and give them as gifts after the wedding. Or, in winter, grow your own paperwhites from bulbs for even less. For the bride's bouquet, a nosegay of cymbidium orchids is a way to carry a bit of luxury down the aisle for less than a large bouquet would cost.

The Food: Many restaurants will set a minimum that you have to spend on food, so instead of adding another vendor by ordering a traditional wedding cake, serve one of the restaurant's desserts to your guests instead. If you're not a fan of champagne, or not a fan of the cost, but you still want to have a celebratory toast, sparkling Golden Star Tea is a delicious non-alcoholic option (and it's way more grown-up than sparkling cider), and will only set you back about $12 a bottle.

Other Details: Instead of a traditional guestbook, continue the chalkboard motif by setting up a photo station with a chalkboard backdrop. Ask guests to write notes and take photos standing with their notes - if you set up a Polaroid, they can put those right into a book for you.

Board #349: Black & Shell

I love this color of pink - like the inside of a nautilus. Accented with black, it's a little bit sexy, and with details like black millinery net and vintage paper cake decorations it's sweet and whimsical. Board #348: Ink & Peony

Barely-there pink often comes across as saccharine and girlish, but when paired with almost-black, ink blue it is moody and mysteriously romantic. This wedding board was largely inspired by Kari Herer's gorgeous photo of peonies - if you haven't seen her work, you must stop by her Etsy store - and the photo of blackberries and figs echo the colors perfectly. I'd love to see a bedroom based on this palette...
